MACR: know the man but not the plane - 09/01/2005 02:25:08 PM
Howdy, Friends,

I've been wearing out the Search tool in an unsuccessful effort to find the answer to this question. Please excuse me if I'm asking an obvious one, but here goes: is there an index somewhere that provides the MACR number for specific crew members?

My quandry: I am trying to find the MACR(s) that document the loss of two men from the same bomb group. One of them was killed, the other was a PoW at Stalag Luft I. They are probably in the same squadron, and could well have been on the same plane. I do not know the pilot's name or the serial number of the bomber(s) they were on, but I do have the following:

Date the plane(s) crashed: Sept 27, 1944 (Kassel mission)
Bomb Group: 445th
Bomb Squadron: 700th (for one of the men certainly; less certain for the other)
Names of the men I'm looking for: James A. Murphy (co-pilot) and Victor J. Panconi (gunner)
Serial numbers of the men I'm looking for

Here is a list of the MACR's that describe the 445th's losses on September 27, 1944 (with the bombers' serial numbers and pilots' names):
700th BS
9384 - 44-10497 - Pearson
9396 - 42-95078 - Hansen
9397 - 42-95128 - Bruce
9399 - 42-110022 - Carrow
701st BS
9383 - 44-10490 - Walther
9386 - 41-28922 - Bruland
9395 - 42-94863 - Golden
9761 - 42-50579 - Reynolds
702nd BS
9385 - 44-10511 - Schaen
9388 - 42-50324 - Brent
9389 - 42-50340 - Potts
9390 - 42-50383 - Baynham
9391 - 42-51287 - Donald
9570 - 41-29542 - Jones
9571 - 42-50961 - Miner
9763 - 42-100308 - Warman
9911 - 42-50321 - Sollien
703rd BS
9387 - 41-29579 - Elder
9392 - 42-51342 - Johnson
9393 - 42-51355 - Bolin
9394 - 42-51541 - Chilton
9398 - 42-109789 - Hartman
9400 - 42-110073 - Seeds
9572 - 42-51532 - Mowat
9762 - 42-51080 - Fromm

So, to summarize -- is there an index somewhere that shows the names of the crew members who are covered by a specific MACR?

Thanks in advance,
Jay

Hi Jay,

Found that James A.Murphy was the co-pilot of 42-109796 Macr 2962, which went missing on March 6, 1944.

Best regards from sunny Belgium

Thanks for that info, Luc!

How did you determine that, though? Did you already have that MACR? Or was there an index that you were able to consult?

Cheers,
Jay

Luc can answer for himself, but I'll hazard a guess.   The Mighty Eighth Roll of Honor by Paul Andrews and William Adams, published by the Eighth Air Force Memorial Museum Foundation, 1997.  That part of the "Bits and Pieces" project.

Alternately, go to the original source - the loading lists or squadron war diary for the 700th in the 445th records.  Not sure what access you have to the microfilm records of the group, but if intact that information should be there.

Thanks, Scott. That sort of answers my question.

I was starting to wonder if there was some online resource whose existence I had overlooked.

Luc - I just had to drop you a note and thank you for the effort you put into the MACR database.  It has helped me in my continued research of the 355th FG and 1SF(Exp) and 2SF attached to 355th.  In my research I did uncover one error you may wish to correct, namely MACR 13960 for WR-I on 45-04-07. I believe the correct serial number is 44-72396 not 306? for Lt.Newell Mills.

I have a nearly complete listing and accounting for all the 355 losses in a spreadsheet if you want it for your own reference..  Do you happen to have any info on 45-04-16 Capt.Joseph Lake KIA 357FS near Eferding A/D? Specifically a Macr and a/c ID (OS-?) and tail number?  The Macr should have been in 13929 'range'

RE: MACR: know the man but not the plane - 06/03/2007 02:11:11 PM
Hi,

We have all the crew lists and MACR's for the air battle between the 445th BG and the Luftwaffe over the Hesse State Forest area, Sept. 27, 1944. I have pictures of Panconi, Carrow and a crew picture but Imageshack is not working on this forum today, for some reason.

There was no James Murphy on that plane, nor is he listed on any of the crew lists for what has come to be known as the Kassel Mission.

The crew members were:

1st Lt. Carrow, Raphael E              Pilot
2nd Lt Brainard, Newell                 Co-pilot
2nd Lt Austin, George                   Navigator/Bombardier
T/Sgt.   Tocket, Louis T                 Top Turret Gunner
T/Sgt    Belouski, Roy A                 Radio Operator
S/Sgt    Panconi, Victor J               Nose Turret Gunner
S/Sgt    Dengler, Nicholas              Waist Gunner
S/Sgt    Loether, Charles               Waist Gunner
S/Sgt    Ledlin, Herbert                  Tail Gunner

Carrow, Loether and Lelin survived. The rest were KIA.

Jay,

To the best of my knowledge Project Bits and Pieces is only available in hard copy.  I had heard some years ago that there was consideration of putting it on CD but don't know if it ever happened.  Never heard anything that made me think they were going to make it available on the internet.  Mailing address for Paul Andrews is:

Project Bits and Pieces
PO Box 3010
Warrenton, Va  20188

I do not have a phone or e-mail address for him.  The entire set consists of 4 volumes and goes for about $300.  Excellent research tool.

I know this is a reply to an old post, but it concerns the availability of crew load lists.  To the best of my knowledge, none of the 445th Bomb Group's crew load lists have been microfilmed.  Dick Gelvin and Ed Zobac spent a week at the National Archives in College Park, MD going through legal size file folders and making copies of load lists, formation sheets, and some after-action reports.  After a week there, they had copied some 4,400+ pages of data.  I had scanned most of the material that Dick had before his death.  Not all of the missions were there.  There was a folder for 279 of the 280 missions flown by the 445th - the only one missing was the Kassel mission of 27 Sept 44.

There is a name index on microfilm M1420 in Record Group 92 at the National Archives in College Park, MD. It may also be available at the othr NARA locations.
Hope this helps.

RE: MACR: know the man but not the plane - 05/07/2008 11:10:33 PM
Daniel J Dale--the last name ont he list-- was on Krivik's plane and was killed when Krivik was bringing the plane into the base on two engines and was waved around. When another engine failed, the plane crashed. Krivk, thrown from the plane, went back in and pulled out his crew. He couldn't save his navigator--Daniel Dale.

We have pictures of Victor Panconi, if you need them. Also of the Pearson crew.
