MACR 11867 Air-Sea -Rescue efforts
-

I recently received MACR 11867 concerning the loss of 1Lt. Chester W. Lawrence 359FS, 356FG, on January 18, 1945. He was returning from France alone that afternoon in bad weather and crashed about 20 miles off the coast of Clacton on Sea, England. He was flying on a heading of 330 degrees. His last contact was with a 67th Fighter Wing Controller at 1415 hours. The MACR states that in addition to Air-Sea- Rescue, a Major Richard A. Rann, 0-886030, led a four aircraft search that was forced to return after a short period due to weather. Were these aircraft from the 356FG or were they a part of the 67th FW. I've read that either Group or Wing Headquarters (I'm not sure which) had fighters that were used specifically for Air-Sea-Rescue cover and search. The P-47's seems to have been the type most used for this purpose. Does anyone recognize Maj. Rann, and whether he was a part of this Air-Sea-Rescue fighter cover or was he a regular member from the 356FG or the 359FS and sent up just to help look? Patrick McKeon
