RE: Lt.McClintock,18/9/44 crash in Holland - 03/26/2006 11:11:33 PM
Hi
The crew is
1st Lt. Ralph L. McClintock-Pilot
2nd Lt. Robert W. Shaw-Co Pilot
T/Sgt. Alan Christal-Crew Cheif
S/Sgt. Robert E. Callahan-Radio operator

Intelligence report listed 3 or 4 chutes from the burning plane over the DZ.
McClintock was the only fatality.
I don't know the fates of the rest of the crew, but if I find more, I will pass it along.

Hope this is the information you were looking for.
Take Care

Hi
I found out that two days after the shoot down, the rest of the crew was reported to have been rescued by the 82nd. They were reported to be in good shape

Just to confuse things, if you check the names above on the ABMC database the two show up:

Robert W. Shaw
Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army Air Forces
Service # 0-887922
53rd Squadron, 61st Troop Carrier Group
Entered the Service from: Kansas
Died:
Missing in Action or Buried at Sea
Tablets of the Missing at Netherlands American Cemetery Margraten, Netherlands

Allen Christal
Technical Sergeant, U.S. Army Air Forces
Service # 19074026
53rd Squadron, 61st Troop Carrier Group
Entered the Service from: Missouri
Died:
Missing in Action or Buried at Sea
Tablets of the Missing at Netherlands American Cemetery Margraten, Netherlands

While there is a R. L. McClintock registered with the WW2 Memorial website.  He of course may not be the man you are looking for.  He is not on the ABMC so his body would be buried in his home town perhaps?
2 LT R. L. McClintock

ID: 01062247
Branch of Service: U.S. Army
Hometown: Hardee County, FL
Status: KIA

he does not appear on that page in the scanned version on the NARA website however!?
No record of Callahan either place.  Perhaps the two above were lost on a later date.

Well,
I went back to the microfilm and did find out that Callahan was the only survivor.
He was rescued by the Dutch and returned to the 82nd. He saw Christal come out behind him, but when rescued he was told that one of his crew had been killed. Shaw and Mclintock are listed as KIA, but with no explenation.
Also, witnesses are said to have 3 or 4 chutes from 206.

Sorry for the mix up!
Will try to do better next trip

RE: Lt.McClintock,18/9/44 crash in Holland - 07/18/2007 05:49:50 AM
I must have been asleep at the wheel when I posted the question about what happened following the downing of my Dad's, Lt. Donald W. Cox's, C-47 in Holland on 18 September 1947. That particular crash was the other plane, #806, in the squadron of Lt. Ralph L. McClintock that went down on 18 September 1944. I found a copy of the intelligence report that is referred to in these postings in the personal effects of my Dad's not too long ago. I did not connect the two airplanes until I had read Lt. McClintock posting several times and then I finally recognized the name. Unlike the crew of McClintock I believe that my Dad's crew was far more fortunate in that they were all rescued although I have not checked the military cemetery database.

I wonder if anyone can tell me where he (Cox) crash-landed and how he and crew were rescued? Would anyone know if any of the crew are still living? Any information would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to put down as much as possible for family records. My Dad very rarely talked about any of this.
