Lt. Leo Belskis - 08/18/2008 07:58:22 PM
I am looking for any information of my uncle Lt. Leo Belkis. His plane was shot down and he was killed on 12/11/1944.

ChugALug:
Your uncle Leo was a pilot in the 532nd Bomb Squadron who arrived at Ridgewell in Sept 1944.  Here is the entry in 532nd Squadron Diary from Sept 1, 1944 when they arrived.

As per SO 200, the following combat crew were assigned: F/O Leo Belskis, 2nd Lts Glenn C. Vaughan, James V. Collett, Ross W. Perrin Jr; Sgts Lynn J. Laurette Jr; Cpls Elvis A. McCoy, Edward M. Cole, Robert F. Rogers, Walter R. Newman, Durward V. Suggs.
You can study your uncle's 25 mission history through the unit history tab, then group war diaries.  I suggest you read the group, 532nd Squadron, and Medical Detachment Diaries for the history from Sept 1 up until you uncle was killed in action on December 11, 1944.  Loss was attributed to flak with crash at Mannheim.

Here is the crew on Dec 11, by position, rank, fate, date(12/11/1944), aircraft#, and Missing Air Crew Report #

Your uncle's last name is apparently misspelled in some of the records.  The Missing Air Crew Report # 11341 may have info of interest to you. There are also numerous 381st history books avaialble if you have interest.  We also welcome family members to join the 381st Bomb Group Memorial Association to honor their veteran.  Let me know if you have more questions or need assistance in further research.
