Lt. Jack Meyers - 07/03/2004 07:11:22 PM
I'm looking for any infomation about my mother's cousin, 2nd Lt. John R. (Jack) Meyers, lost over Italy 1944. Unconfirmed report says he was serving with the 885th Bombardment Squadron, 15th Air Force, KIA on the night of September 10, 1944, B-17 tail number 42-30500. Any help greatly appreciated! Rebecca....there is a MACR (Missing Air Crew Report) data base at the top of this page....I input the date 09/10/1944 in the date search and the very last entry lists MACR 9578 B-17 42-30500 as the 2nd BG 885th BS. However, the 885th Bomb Sq referred to here was not in the 2nd BG,but was assigned as the 2641st SG (P) or 15 SG (P). The SG was Special Group and it was assigned to and under the control of the 15th AAF HQ. The (P) stands for Provisional. There was a mix of aircraft types...B-17s, B-24s etc, and the missions were usually flown at night, dropping agents, supplies ,and the like to the Resistance Units operating against the Germans. A check of the www.abmc.gov website does not show John R. Myers, which means one of two things,..either his remains were recovered and sent to the U.S. for reburial in a local cemetery, or the abmc listing is incorrect. The abmc website ONLY lists those who are buried in one of the abmc..American Battle Monuments Commission Cemeteries. Do you have any knowledge, as to whether his remains were recovered and returned to the U.S. for reburial ? You should go to the top of this page and click on the Research block in the top row at the right. This will bring up the addresses of the places to write for a copy of the MACR 9578, which will be an account of the loss of B-17 42-30500. Also, you should write for his IDPF..Individual Deceased Personnel File...be sure to request the IDPF under the FOI act...Freedom Of Information Act..The IDPF will give additional information as to the recovery of his remains and possible shipment to a local cemetery in the U.S. Be sure to include his army serial number if you know it, and all pertinent information you have available...the more information, the quicker the correct copies can be located. Dear Rebecca

With the team, we visited 3 time the crash site of Miss Charlotte and scelled a commemorative plaque at the honnor of the S/lt John R.Meyers'crew in July 1993, in presence of the Ernest Kolnn (S/Lt Meyers'radio operator) sisters.

I sugest you of took contact with Mrs John K. Mattison, of Canon-City, Colorado, who know more infopramtions about the discovery.

You can too visit us at : http://www.aero-relic.org/1024x768/Francais/B-17%2042-30500%20Meyers/1f-01-b1742-30500.html
