Lt Herbert W Mackey 863rd BS

I am truly greatful this forum is carrying on, and wish I had joined sooner. I am looking for any info on my grandfather's plane info, mission list, etc. I grew up listening to great stories, and going to a few reunions with him and my dad (I was fairly little still in the early 80's)
He was called home back in 98 and there was so much I realize I wish I had known about his time in the war. It is my understanding tthere aren't many left if at all from his crew. He would have been 91 in may of this year.

We have a lot of pictures with him and his crew in front of his b-17, and also from the 5thERS with a PBY Catalina crew and p-47 with ground grew, but not nose art, tail numbers, etc. I also would like to know if there is a place that would want copies of these photos (we have sent some to the museum across the pond. I am forever greatful for any help.

    Hello Jared,

Your grandfather, 2nd LT Herbert W. Mackey, and his crew reported to the 493rd BG on 28 August 1944 and they were assigned to the 863rd BS.  At that time, the crew included:

    2nd LT Herbert W. Mackey - pilot
    2nd LT Richard L. McClain, Jr - co-pilot
2nd LT Jacob Kinn - navigator
    2nd LT Laverne J. Dempsey - bombardier
Cpl Michael J. Lasalata - flight engineer
Cpl Ralph L. Peshek - gunner
Cpl Elmer W. Fuzzell - flight engineer
Cpl Hugh C. Price - gunner
Cpl Roderick R. Reynolds - gunner

Your grandfather flew 35 mission.  On 29 September 1944, Herbert was promoted to 1st LT.  On 4 February 1945, he was transferred to the 5th Emergency Rescue Squadron located at Halesworth, Suffolk.  When he transferred, he took with him an entirely new crew.

I do have additional information that is too hard to share through this web page.  Contact me directly at my e-mail address (in my signature below) and I would be more than happy to expand on the above information.
