Hello Is there anyone who could tell me a bit more about Lt. Herbert Potts? He was the pilot of an B-24 that went down on september 27 1944, probably over Germany. I`m especially interested in the circumstances of the crash and the name of the plane. Plane`s nr: 42-50340 Many thanks Patricia

Mike: According to Wallace Forman's book B-24 Nose Art Name Directory, both aircraft carried the name King Kong. By my records, the aircraft Potts was flying on the ill-fated Kassel mission (a B-24H-20 CF, 42-50340, B-Baker) was not named prior to the mission. King Kong is carried on the 445th rolls as belonging to a B-24H-25 CF, 42-50383, X-XRay which was also assigned to the 702nd BS and went down on the 27 Sept 1944. Ray Lemons, the left waist gunner on King Kong (42-50383) is a good friend of mine who is living in Southern California. Ray was one of 5 survivors of 1st Lt James C Baynham's crew. I don't know how the mixup occurred, but as many aircraft carried the same name, it's understandable how confusion can arise. Tom Brittan, an authority on B-24's of the 8th Air Force, has gone over my records and made appropriate corrections.

Patricia, You ought to go over to the Kassel Mission website if you want to know the circumstances of the battle when Lt. Potts went down. It's a fascinating story, with hints of a coverup. http://kasselmission.com . I believe Ray Lemon's story is on there. I have a picture of King Kong if you're interested.
