Lt. Cundy's P-51D Alabama Rammer Jammer
-

I am planning to build a 1/48 scale model of Lt. Arthur Cundy's P-51D-15-NA 44-15092, and am looking for photographs or any other reference material. The only thing I have found so far is a photo and three view drawing in Osprey Publishing's Mustang Aces of the Eighth Air Force. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. David Carter

I am mainly interested in the nose art, in that I am going to have to make my own decal. The book you mentioned is not available locally (Barnes & Noble), and all our public librarys were washed away by Hurricane Katrina. I have found several second hand copies available sight unseen. Is the picture on page 68 in color? It sounds like the same black and white shot that I found in the Mustang Aces book...five men in flight jackets sitting on the cowling and six men including Lt Cundy standing, multi engine aircraft in background. In the color profile, the black letters appear to be shadowed or outlined in yellow, but the one black and white does not seem to support that impression. If the P-51 Nose Art Gallery is in color, I will order it. Thanks, David

David it's the same photo and is black-white. The name ( on both sides ) was black with narrow yellow outlines on right/lower sides ( see attachment ). Most 353rd names were in black lower case script. There were pilot / ground crew names in very small black script in 6 lines below the name ( left only ). It had a black Spitfire rear-view mirror on a tall bracket. On the right side the last " R " of JAMMER overlapped the chequers slightly. The single swastika would date the photo Nov.-Dec. 1944; his claims were Me109 27-11-44 Me109 24-12-44 FW190 14-1-45 1-Me109, 2-FW190s 2-3-45. (all air ). Nick

David, In support of Nick's posting, here are a couple of poor quality shots showing the placement of the lettering on the right side and the fact that this a/c also received the additional rows of checks whilst still bearing the name. Peter

Thanks Fellows for all the help. That information will put me well on the way to doing my art work for the decals! David Carter
