Lt. Col. Liles, a fighter ace, passed away - 06/10/2008 09:17:44 AM
Dear all, this is to let you know that Lt. Col. (ret.) Brooks J. Liles passed away on May 28, 2008. He was credited with five aerial victories in WWII and the Korean War and also destroyed two enemy A/Cs on the ground.

1/Lt Liles was shot down by flak defending the airfield in Klecany, near Prague, Czechoslovakia, on March 3, 1945 while strafing it with other pilots of the 55th FG. His fellow 1/Lt Howes landed to try to pick him up but they failed and were - being wounded - later captured.

Another bit of sad news.  My thoughts are with his family.

The Liles/Howes story is one of the best from WW2...I guess you'd call it an heroic failure, but amazing none-the-less.
