Well, it turns out my dad, Anthony (Tony) Annecchiarico, arrived in Italy 19 January 1945.
He was a B-17 co-pilot assigned to 15th AF, 5th BW, 97th BG, 340th BS, stationed at Amendola.
He departed Italy 13 August 1945.
I have a photocopy of a picture of him and his tent mates, Mike Scorcio and Phil Shalanca, standing outside their tent. The picture was kindly sent to me by Mike Scorcio, who is looking to reconnect with his military buddies from WWII.
I know Mike and Tony never flew together. Don't know whether Phil and Tony flew together.
I would very much like to hear from anyone who knew Tony Annecchiarico at Amendola - or at any time during his military experience. I'm also most happy to forward to Mike Scorcio any info from anyone who served with him during WWII.
Tony died 9 October 1963 in Marseilles, France. He was piloting a Douglas C-74 Globemaster from Denmark to Egypt. After a re-fueling stop in Marseilles, the plane developed some trouble on take-off and crashed into the hills surrounding the airport at Marseilles. Tony was 42 years old.
Mike Scorcio is very much alive and full of "p" and "v". He is 87 years young.
Anyone knowing either (or both) of these two men, please contact me.
Thank you.
Antonia Annecchiarico
