Andy,

The 1996 'History of the 447th Bomb Group' says only the following about this incident:

"Lt Aaberg, on his third mission, ran into problems, ordered his crew to bail out over England, but was unable to get out of the plane before it crashed."
Another section says Aaberg flying #855 that day.  Could have been 42-37855.  Will see if I can find anything in other sources.  What is your interest in this incident?

Andy,

Follow this link to the web site of Aviation Archaeology, they provide copies of accident reports.

http://www.aviationarchaeology.com/src/AARmonthly/Feb1944O.htm

Scroll down about 80% to the bottom, follow the dates in the left hand column.  You will see information about this accident.  Also confirms the serial number in my earlier post.  Based on their codes it seems that Aarberg ran out of gas and crashed.  Could be dozens of reasons to run out of gas, a leak from any number of sources, engine damage that caused higher fuel consumption, and many more possibilities.  Go to their home page for information about how to order a copy of the accident report.

Here is some more information.
See Aarberg/Moriarty crew profile: http://www.447bg.com/Aaberg%20Moriarty%20Crew.htm
See Richard Pitt diary mission 2.  http://www.447bg.com/Richard%20Pitt.pdf "Date: 2/25/44 Ship: 855 (Rosemary III). Place: Regensburg Mission: 2

Always remember this one, lost our pilot.  Avery long haul and #3 engine went out 10 minutes after target.  Lot of fighters around few rockets shot at us but they never came in close.  Made it back to the French coast on 3 engines okay.  But one and four went out right after we left French coast where we were hit by flak.  Bailed out in Southern England.  Aarberg shoot didn't open.  He did a wonderful job getting us back.  Made the channel on one engine.  855 total loss.
