One more thing-any nose art photo of B-17G 42-31889 Mammy Yokum? This fort force-landed in Switzerland on 18 july 1944.

Thanks shooshoo. I saw that photo, but unfortunately the nose art isn't visible. Don't know was it only an inscription ''Mammy Yokum'' or it was also some drawing...? You say ''PFF markings'', did you mean on dark blue wing bands (with white outline?) and OD/dark blue rudder (also with white stripes) or on something else? Does this fort had dark blue elevators too, or OD/gray? In the same book I saw a few more 42-31889 photos, not sure but looks to me that it had cheyenne tail turret?

Chobi the blue wing bands and elevators were the 2BG markings, the white "arrow" and wider white rudder band were the 429BS markings. On camouflaged aircraft the rudders were usually white with a blue band but this one has alternating OD - blue stripes with narrow white edges. It had a Cheyenne tail turret. I think it only had the name, on the lower nose. Nick

I haven't been able to find any photos of the Mammy Yokums that flew in the 99th. I believe that the first one, 42-32031 had nose art similar to the squadron insignia of the 817th BS of the 483rd BG. This squadron was known as the Mammy Yokum squadron. Marty

Chobi, I just stumbled upon this thread, researching a book I am writing about my father and my heart is still thumping! I will get the pic and post it but for now here is a scan of a photocopy: <a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/12091228@N07/1243567629/" title="Photo Sharing"><img Briefly, 2nd Lt. William S. Winkler was co-pilot from the factory just out of training with the 483rd, 817th squadron. They all decided to use names from Li'l Abner and my dad painted Mammy. The squadron adopted his logo for the whole squadron but on arrival in Italy, the crew and ship were transferred to the 2nd group. He never flew a mission with the guys who adopted his logo! I got the skinny on the wreck of Mammy, too but that'll be in the book! Title so far: Memmingen. I hope to fish you guys for lots of info.
