Looking for info/ pics on my grandfather William Meyer Johnson 381st

Hello to all,
I am looking for information regarding my grandfather T/SGT William Meyer Johnson.  He flew with the 381st in the 535th bomb group.  He was also a radio operator.  Any information helps and if someone knows of any photos that would be great.  I never had the oppurtunity to meet my grandfather, but from what my father says he was a great man.  I have a couple of pictures of him from the war, but I would like  to find some more information on him.  Thanks

Daniel Johnson

    Hi Dan

I think you mean 381st BG 535th BS. The best place to start if you haven't already been there is: http://www.381stbg.org/index.php

Another site that is especially helpful and has a large photo database is: http://www.fold3.com/

As with any search the more you know the better your search results will be. For instance it would be helpful to know your grandfather's date in service, his birth date, his service #, serial # and/or name of a/c he served aboard, etc.

Write everything down, and bookmark helpful sites. I guarantee you, unless you hit a home run, and find out everything you want to know, right out of the gate, that there will come a time when you know you saw something, somewhere, but can't remember where it was.

    Good luck to you

    No problem Dan

    Here's another link I missed:  http://www.381st.org/Home.aspx

As you research your grandfather, I think you will discover that he was more than just a great man. He, and all those who served, are true American heroes. The world owes them a debt of recognition, and it's up to us to save their names and deeds from obscurity.

    Thanks

    Hi Daniel,
Having searched the various 381st databases I cannot find a William Meyer Johnson. However, there is a Meyer W. Johnson who joined the 535th as a S/Sgt on June 12th 1944 as a Radio Op/Gunner, was promoted to T/Sgt  on June 24th and left England for the US on April 13th 1945. His serial number was 34254505 and he flew with the James R. Lang crew at least until November 1944. Pretty sure this must be your Grandfather and I have found all 35 of his missions. I've attached them here as a PDF but, unfortunately it is missing out the pilot's name. If you drop me an email to jim@381st.com I can send you the original Excel file. However, all the pilots are Jim Lang apart from the first mission in the list who is Bob Osborne and the last who is John Tuz. These missions are not in Chronological order.
    No picture I'm afraid.
It's unusual to find all missions for a crew member. Quite pleased with this one.
    Good luck in your researches,
    Jim

    Jim,
Thank you for taking the time to look that up for me.  I got the first and middle name mixed up in my original post.  Your post has given me a wealth of knowledge to build off of.
