Dave, If the guys in the 64th do not have more info...you might try going to the local Abbeville library and searching thru their newspapers in the weeks following 8 August 1942... since the memorial is stateside, he was probably lost during the flight across the Atlantic... Also, I believe that he graduated from flight school in May of 1942...which suggests that he was probably a copilot... Another possible source and some rough data, Steve [signature]

Here is the latest info that I have on John Pere'.

Here is a relative of Lt. Schalamon that was with John Pere' when they disappeared -- Wesley Schalamon, wasmtn51@aol.com.

The following came from a 64th TCG pilot.

I am interested in your note about Arthur Schalamon and John L. Pere'. I
take it they were the two who vanished while we were in Goose Bay waiting
for favorable weather to fly across the ocean.

I recall that there were two officers lost in a canoe in the river along
the airport at Goose Bay. As I recall the river was quite close to the
airport.
Talking to Jim L. I found Jim and Charles C. rented a
canoe and went up and dawn the river and as Jim put it Christmas tipped
the canoe over for fun and they both had to walk to shore. Jim recalls
the water where they were was only about waist deep but it was so cold
they almost didn't make it to shore.

Then I talked to Frank M. and he remembers being asked to fly a search flight up and down the river looking for "Two members of our Group but he didn't know their names" but
he did fly up and down the river looking for the canoe or the missing men.
Mac said he and I also took a canoe trip on the river but I can't seem to remember it but I do know the water was cold. and the river ran through some wild country. As I recall the ground was tundra, frozen just a few inches under ground. I will keep checking my records but maybe there are members of the 64th who know a lot more about what happened and who was involved than I do
