Looking for info about 1 Dec 1943 bombing run - 10/28/2005 09:31:56 PM
I am researching the 1 December 1943 mission over Burma of B-24J, Tail No. 42-73159. I am focusing on LTC Everett C Plummer who was flying in the aircraft as acting commander, but the aircraft was pilotted by 1LT Granvill Stringfellow.
The aircraft was shot down that day by attacking Japanese aircraft. The aircraft was lost. All on board died.

Those on board:
Pilot: 1LT Granvill Stringfellow (0-725549)
Co-Pilot/acting Commander: Everett C. Plummer (0-300865)
Navigator: 1LT Hugh MacPherson (0-660875)
Bombadier: 1LT Lancer W Robertson (0-726076)
Engineer: T/Sgt. Charles C Bowen (14070288)
Radio Operator: S/Sgt. Alfonse S Cieslak (36301894)
Asst. Engineer: S/Sgt. Henry W Ley (11045340)
Asst. Radio Operator: S/Sgt. Henry G Vanis (37190972)
Armorer/Gunner: Cpl. George W Tidd (14073599)
Armorer/Gunner: S/Sgt. Bertram J Archer (12140538)

Passenger: Capt. John W Lasell (0-219261)

I am hoping someone has performed some research on this aircraft or has some knowledge about its crew. I am a reporter with The Trentonian newspaper in Trenton, NJ, and I hope to do a story about these men and the day they were shot down.

I have learned the aircraft was the lead in the formation that day.
THree men filed as witnesses to the shoot down:
2LT Henry J McElderry (0-1698928)
1LT Roy M Shaw (0-726835)
Charles E Lewallen F/O (T121925) is listed as a co-pilot but nothing indicates of what aircraft.

Has anyone ever run across any of these names before?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Charles,
I can tell you that the bombardier Robertson graduated from the bombardier school at Kirtland, NM class 42-08.  I have a class photo listing his name but not specifying him in my website at this link:  http://freepages.military.rootsweb.com/~hfhm/Crosshairs/1989_Jun/page_19.jpg

If you would like a scanned copy, let me know.

Thank you for that information. Do you have anything else on Robertson? I would really like to piece together the lives of this entire crew.

Thank you
Charlie

Charlie,
Sorry but I have no other data on him.  Can you ID him in the photo on my site?
