Looking for a photo!!! - 09/25/2007 05:46:07 PM
Hi, I have another ? Does anyone have any info on a picture I am looking for? My Great uncle wrote home in Oct 1944 from Corsica and at the end of his letter he asked his parents( my Great Grandparents) about a picture taken around the middle and last of Augest 1944 on the invasion of southern France. It was a B-26  being shot down with an engine falling out. He said in the letter that it was in lots of newspapers and magazines, but in the letter said he couldnt say why, just that he wanted a copy. He was Capt. Wendall S. Hilsmier. Thanks

The photo you mention is regarded as among the most famous WWII Marauder photos. As this Marauder was a 17th BG 95th BS ship (B/N 50 42-107735), "Flossie's Fury", we can understand why he wanted a copy. It was in service from medio June 1944 until August 20th 1944, when it was shot down over Toulon, France. It replaced another B/N 50 named "Flossie's Fury" which were taken out of service on June 8th 1944 as War Weary (100 missions claimed).
Missing Air Crew Report (MACR) # 7867. Pilot was Lt. James L. Albury. 17th BG lost three ships when they bombed gun positions near Toulon harbor. As your great uncle wanted this photo, I will add some more info about the two other ships below later today, for the sake of history.

WOW!! Thanks for the quick answer!! I never thought I would figure that one out! Seeing that my uncle flew in the group...I can only wonder if he knew the crew or actually saw it happen. Thanks again.

Here is info about 17th BG 37th BS 42-96010, B/N 25. It was hit by flak in the nose over France (Toulon).
Pilot was Lt. Robert E. Browning. Attached photo is taken from another 37th BS plane on the mission to Toulon on August 20th 1944, short time before B/N 25 was shot down (aircraft close). MACR # 7865.

The 432nd BS Marauder lost on August 20th 1944 was 42-107728 B/N 84. It was hit by flak in in right engine and ditched at sea NW of Corsica. Four of the crew were rescued by a Catalina flying boat.

Those saved were the Pilot F/O Beverley D Draughon; Co-Pilot F/O Cornell; Bombardier 2nd.Lt Dobbs and S/Sgt Clark. Those lost were S/Sgt Orand J Hoffman, S/Sgt David L Meador and S/Sgt Sexton Richard. On attached photo from Lake Charles, LA, 1944, from left is seen original crew: Draughon, Cornell, Dobbs, Hoffman, Chisum and Clark.
