Look for 38th BS Squadron patch - 03/07/2005 02:03:18 PM
Can anyone tell me if the 30th BG, 38th BS had a patch? And, if yes, where I can obtain one or the art work to have one recreated.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Jim, all I have is a b&w sketch and description from the Maurer book. I have not seen a color version of it. Someone else out here may have a color picture. Hope this helps some.

Thanks for the help Gary.

I think I led you astray. I'm looking for the patch from 1944. I think the one you have is later.

Here's a very poor image of what I think is the patch. But, I can't verify it.

There is an image of the patch you are looking for on this site:

http://members.aol.com/brimiljeep/WebPages/SquadronPatchAAFPage.html

You have to scroll down the page, as they are in numerical order. Unfortunately, the right click features have been disabled for the site, so you can not copy the image. I'll keep looking for another source for an image of this patch.

Thanks Anne,

I found that one too. That's the image I tried to post earlier. The guy that hosts that site is no help. He won't provide any research assistance.........

Here is a better copy of that image. I did a screenshot, and then cropped out all of the other patches. I haven't had much luck finding another source for an image.

Brian maintains a pretty good site, but alot of his patch images are sent to him - he doesn't always have or do his own research. There are a couple of other sites that maintain WWII unit insignia, but haven't found any there yet. I will email a friend who is a WWII collector to see if he has a better image.

You may want to contact the AFHRA as they maintain unit histories/lineages. They may have information on the pre-1945 version. Their contact information can be found from the Research tab at the top of this page.

Thanks Anne, Gary ----

But, now we've gone from none to two patches......

The one Anne found and the first one Gary posted is the one I found too. I've never seen the second one.

Any opinions on which one would have been used in 1944?

Gary, can you devulge where you found the patches?

Thanks again for all your help. You have no idea how long I've searched for this patch.

Jim, my friend who is a WWII insignia collector sent those pics to me. I'll ask him if he has any info on period used, etc., and let you know.

That's probably about right, Phil. I already sent an email to my friend. I'll post his reply when I get it, but I'd guess that your info is dead on.

RE: Look for 38th BS Squadron patch - 03/08/2005 09:47:35 PM
From my friend, the WWII insignia maven:

"It appears that there were two different hippo designs before the Maurer
approved Knight design. Only members of the organization can tell you what
was actually worn. The PR push to sell the war effort included more than
1000 designs by the cartoonists of the day. Most were approved for units by
the heraldry centers without unit input. The old military externally
designed, approved and directed for use. Several of those designs were
publicized stateside and the unit in the field was not informed of the
design and created and wore designs of their own. I don't have any specific
information on the 38th BS."

Given Phil's experience w/ WWII aircraft, insignia, models (aircraft, not the women - at least, not that I know of!), short of finding someone who was in the 38th, I'm willing to go w/ his view of the 2 designs.

My dad flew for the 38th in early 1945.  I have a photo of the sign outside the command center showing a shield with the KNIGHT theme emblem and the unit name of "VANGUARDS"; I also have a photo showing him with the unit patch on his jacket.  The shades of gray in the photos can provide some hints regarding the colors of the emblem.  I can't ask dad about the colors; he has recently passed.

I will be pleased to send some digitals in the near future.  Currently, I'm changing computers and possibly internet connections.  I'm using dial-up at this time, and as websites are using more animated graphics it just gets slower and slower.  At this time, I might have best success sending the images as an email attachment, if that won't work, give me your address and I will post hardcopies by USpost.

This is my first attempt to upload and send an image; wish me luck.  If I am successful, this will include an image of the VANGUARDS sign.
