 Leyte Island/Information on father

Leyte Island/Information on father - 05/19/2007 09:54:05 PM
Attempting to find information on my father Gordon Vondrak  (also found mis-spelled as Yondrak).  He was a tail gunner with the 70th Troop Carrier Squadron--unknown grp #.  He was killed on Leyte Island on March 10, 1945.  (Flew into mountain)  Any info would be appreciated.  What aircraft might this possibly have been?  Thanks

Accrording to WWII Combat Sqds,
70th Troop Carrier aircraft were
C-47:1943-1945
C-46:1944-1945
 
Most likely he was a door gunner..

Mike,
I have a short report filed on  WD AGO Form 52-1  with the heading   REPORT OF DEATH.  It states nothing about the actual accident.  Only that his body was found/identified two months later-death was due to a plane crash.  I received this report from the NPRC in St. Louis, Mo.  I still intend to write a letter to  U.S. Army Personnel Command, Public Affairs Office in Alexandria, VA.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.   Thanks
