    Hi Brian

Regarding B-17's named 'Lucky 13' Wallace R. Forman lists three, but only has serial numbers for two of them.

B-17G 44-8283 18th BS, 34th BG. MIA April 5th 1945 but name had changed to 'Dinah-Mite' and was with the 7th BS.

B-17G 42-37846 331st BS, 94th BG. Salvaged June 2nd 1945. Details i have indicate that this aircraft didn't fly a combat mission after September, possibly October 1944.

The third one he lists as being with the 452nd BG, but no more details.

    Regards

    Chris.

    Hello Brian,

In Wallace Forman's book "B-24 Nose Art Name Directory", one B-24 named LUCKY 13 is listed, serial number 42-52413.  It was assigned to the 459th BG/757th BS.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you all.  The reason for my interest is that my other grandfather (Army infantry, New Guinea '42-'45) had a love of the '13'.  He was born on the 13th and he actually ended up dying on the 13th.  He was a businessman and named his company 'Lucky 13'.  I have some brass tokens that are engraved 'Lucky 13' that I keep as memento's.
But he was a veteran of the infantry and I didn't think of this until today.  If there is anyone out there that has a special connection to one of those planes and would like a coin please let me know.  It would be a simple memento from one veteran to another with a certain connection to '13'.  He would love knowing that his coins are still carried.

    Hi Brian

That's a nice offer. Unfortunately the tail gunner, John Gabay, whose diary Hal attached in an earlier message passed away a number of years ago and i am hoping to get details on more of his crew later. A number of his later missions in March 1944 were flown with different pilots. At the moment i don't know if John Gabay was part of the original crew of 'Lucky 13' as the details for the 94th BG's missions flown in 1943 are not very well detailed at the moment.

Another name, 'Vern Scott', is also shown for this aircraft in 'Heavy Bombers of the Mighty Eighth'. At the moment i don't know when this name was used.

I'll see what i can find.

    Regards

    Chris.
