I am not certain, but there is a possibility Project K was the code name for the construction of camp Kerns or it had something to do with the Manhatten Project (Atomic Bomb) that Camp Kerns was also involved in. I suggest you go to Meta Crawler.com, punch in Project K Kearns Utah WWII, then go down to the 13th ural. Some of the other urals may also be of some help. Good luck, yunch

More info to look at.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Project this site lists the various project names involved with the Manhattan project. Although Project K is not mentioned ...the article does mention a Project Alberta known as Project A which was located at Wendover Utah not far from Kearns, the mission of Project Alberta was three-fold: (1) design a bomb shape for delivery by airplane, then procure and assemble it; (2) continue the testing work of Army Air Force Projects W-47 (ballistic testing of atomic bomb design) and Silverplate (modification of B-29s to perform the mission); and (3) train aircrews and ordinance crews in preparation for deployment overseas. Kearns was a large training facility reference http://historytogo.utah.gov/places/olympic_locations/historyofkearns.html..both the Enola Gay and Bockscar were part of the Project Alberta located in Utah. Hope this helps in your research..

PS.... wonder if Project K was related to establishing the base itself...in the link about kearns it indicates the major changes that took place which resulted in the town's growth...

After going back to Metacrawler, my first guess is fortified by the additional facts read. Two months after Dec,41, the US purchased 5,000 acres in the Utah wheatfields, a few months later 1,000 bldgs were completed for what was called "Basic Training Center N0 5". 65 years ago it was Utahs largest community with over 40,000 personnel, the largest dental facility in the US and a 1,100 bed hospital. It did not become involved withe Manhatten project until 1945.

Are you sure it was Dec 1944, because I show Kearns already being used as a basic Training center in July 1943. I would think the date would be Dec 1942, because the AAF was not building any new facilities in Dec 44.

WWII Wendover AAF was the training site of the 509th Composite Group, the B-29 unit which dropped the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs. Perhaps that was Project "K"? Terry T.

acording to the Utah Historical Society ... The Kearns Army Air Base, or Camp Kearns, was constructed on a 5,450-acre dry-farm area in Kearns, Utah, beginning in 1942. By 1943, Kearns was Utah's third largest city, with 40,000 troops and l,000 to l,200 civilian employees. The base served as a basic training and overseas replacement center for ninety thousand military personnel. I was by there a few days ago, at least I'm told that this is it. It is General Avaition and UNG ... Mike

Mark, I erred on the 1944 date and did not catch it untill later thus the edit to 1941. The camp was built in early 42 at the time the GI was stationed there. The Atomic Bomb entered the equation in 45 according to my source, ergo, my assumption is based on the time line, project "K" being the construction of the camp and not the Atomic Bomb.

Kearns, Utah was discussed on another site recently. Charles Buchinski (Bronson) B-29 gunner took some weather training and gunney training at Kearns before going to Kansas to a B-29 group. Kearns has a historian and a nice web site. Hope this helps. Phillip

Is it a new website and historian? I have corresponded in the past with a lady who operated a very nice site, but it was taken down several months ago. It sounded like there was some local politics involved or something.

Phillip I did check the site and discovered it was back up. It is definitely improved and very informative. I attempted to email my previous contact (Pam) but have not heard back. Roger
