Joseph F. McGettigan

Trying to locate information on  Joseph F. McGettigan,  SSGT 347 BS.  MACR 4610 covering the loss of 42-32014, on 30 Apr 1944 lists him as an assistant engineer. Does anyone know what position he would have been flying that day ?

Thanks
George

George....The normal MACR  listing for an aircrew is as follows:

    P    Pilot
    CP  Copilot
    N    Nav
    B    Bomb
    E    Engr
    R    Radio
    BT  Ball
    RW R Waist
    LW  L Waist
    T     Tail

From Dick Drain's 5th Wing History of Aircraft Assigned :

    42-32014  PAPPY YOKUM...347   Tranfer from 483rd BG 31 Mar 44. MIA 30 Apr 44 at Varese
Flw 14 missions. Attacked by fighters. crashed near Bologna. Harold Klein crew,Symonds, Leiby, Moore, Martin, Patzke,McGETTIGAN, Michael,Timpanereo, Kouse, Luera, (MACR 4610)

I would guess that he was flying as the ball turret gunner.

I have forwarded this to Gary Staffo,  at GStaffo@gis.net

Question...are you interested in joining the 99th BG Historical Society....if so, please advise Gary Staffo.

    Jim,

    Thanks for the info.

This MACR is the only one I have seen that lists crew members in this manner. It is dated  30 Apr 44 and lists the crew as:

    P
    CP
    N
    B
    E
    Ass't Eng
    R
    Ass't R/O
    Waist Gunner
    Tail Gunner

I guess he was either the BTG or a waist gunner. Please let me know if you find out a definetly

    George,

The 99th BG database lists him as flying as a waste gunner that day.  I assume you have the full MACR with the statement from one of the crew members that says Joseph McGettigan and Jack Patzke escaped during a forced POW march.

    George,

My uncle was on the same plane and tried to escaped with Joseph McGettigan.  I do think that he was one of the waist gunners that day.

My uncle Carl Kouse was the tail gunner.
