Insignia questions - 09/19/2004 01:06:51 PM
Did each Bomb group, Bomber wing, and bomb squad have their own insignia? If so, is there a web site(s) that has pictures or drawing of each of them for historical purposes? I want to creat a hat or shirt or something for a reunion I am hleping to plan in November for the crew of a particular B-29 bomber from WWII. They were part of the 20th AF, 500th Bomb Group, 73rd Bomb Wing, 881st Bomb Squad. THank you!!!

Look at the top of the homepage here and see the insignias for all the Air Force wings. Probably most groups and squadrons had insignias but all were not official. You could go to the unit database at the top and put in 500 and locate any contact that may be there and pose the question directly to them.

For other groups, etc go to http://b24bw.proboards33.com/ and go click on the Pic Navigation banner. When it opens up, there will be a banner for insignias, etc for a large number of groups and squadrons, mostly B-24s but also B-17s and others. Don't think the 500th is listed here but you can get an idea of what the possibilities are.

Ellen,

The most recognizable symbol for them would be the 20th Air Force insignia. I don't know that the 500th BG had a recognizable group insignia or if any of its squadrons did. They did have the winged ball with spear on their aircraft, that might be something you could use.

Best information you'll find will be at http://b-29.org

...and to keep things clear, use the following chain to describe the unit that your crew was attached to:

20th Air Force - 73rd Bomb Wing - 500th Bomb Group - 881st Bomb Squadron.

Wings and/or Divisions were assigned to an Air Force. Each Wing was made up of 3 to 4 Groups, and each Group was made up of 3 to 4 squadrons.

According to Mauer, the 500th BG did not have have an authorized patch, nor did the 881st BS. The 73rd BW DID have a patch which is as follows. The motto means "Death to Aggressors".

Looks more like a SAC era insignia maybe?

You may be right, Scott. Maurer says the insignia was approved in '58. The book doesn't say if there was a WWII version of the patch. That's one of the things I don't like about Maurer. Even tho the books are on WWII units, the insignia are often post-WWII (as is some of the info as it doesn't stop at the end of the war).

My late Father in Law Robert W. Campbell flew in the 500th Bomb Group.  I believe this is one of their aircraft.
