Insignia Research - 09/19/2007 04:08:34 PM
The 437th BS of the 319thBG had an unofficial insignia during the war.
This image consisted of a shield with a motto banner. I can't locate a
legable photo of this insignia. Hoping someone can tell just what the 437th
Bomb Squadron motto was and possibly even have a good photo image
they wouldn't mind sharing.

Thanks,
Bob

I'm not sure if this is the shield you are looking for (attachment), it shows the four squadrons, 437th upper left, 438th upper right, 439th lower left and 440th lower right.

The insignia in the upper left hand corner of the Group shield is the
image that is giving me a problem. If you notice there is a small banner
at the bottom of the 437th insignia and I can't determine what, if any,
motto was written on it.

The photo showing this insignia on the fuselage is great. It looks like
there was a good chance that the motto banner was just for looks
and may never have contained any text at all.

Thanks much for passing this one on.

Added scan of insignia on front page "319th In Action" book. 438th BS had a motto on their banner, but not 437th as shown here...seems that the banner was just part of their squadron "patch"

Judging from I've already researched, coupled with the material you've just
posted, it sure looks like for whatever reason, the 437th never got around
to the motto-phase of their insignia design.

Thanks again for your help in this matter.

VJ,

I've seen the variation between the two 437thBS insignia before.
Do know which of the two designs would have best represented
this outfit during the war, (i.e. the white vs. the gold background)
or were they both pretty much interchangeable?
