Information on Roy Meyers Jr.

Hi guys!

Been on a quest to research my 87 year old mothers cousin who fought in WWII. (I am experienced in records research so have done some research). Following is a rundown, as much as I know or have learned.

Roy Neville (Bud) Meyers Jr. Born 19 Feb. 1920, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After he graduated high school (Hollywood Hi?), he joined the RAF in London. (1938-1939). I don't know how he got to London, but research says a handful of Americans were recruited from the states through Canada and then on to London to join the fight. It's likely he joined up with one of the early RAF Eagle Squadrons. (I requested searches through the RAF Museum and one of their links to no end). That's all I have on his early years.

Genealogy says that after the U.S. joined the war, (1941), he joined the AAF and became a bomber pilot. Says he flew many missions over Germany before being discharged and returning home. Being that early, he must of been with the 8th AAF. Possible also that he might of switched from Eagle Squadron to the RAF VII, before the 8th AAF? (I have no serial number or unit numbers).

NARA says his records were probably lost in the 1973 fire. Am currently searching for a bit more information, so they can conduct another search. All my RAF research has turned up nothing to date. he passed away in March of 1974 in long Beach, CA. (Currently searching for cemetery or obit).

Any help or direction as where to conduct some research is appreciated.

PS:  Also contacted Penn States Military section on the 8th to see what can find there.

Thanks,

Sgt. Mac ;)

FYI...The Veteran's Administration will have his Medical Records. They are keprt in different location, and so were not involved in the fire at St Louis.

Several States gave bonuses to veterans from thier State,..in order to recieve the bonuses, they recorded their discharge papers in thier local County Recorders office. IFyou can locate such, there would be a copy of the Disharge papers on recond. However, the record in the County Recorder Office will give the location where the discharge or releas from active duty. but, will not give his overseas duty stations...however, the Veterans Administraton Medical Records WILL give the location of any medical treatmemt,  and could give a clue as to some of his duty stations..if they exist.

Thanks for the info Jim! NARA sent me a form for the medical, just haven't got around to it yet. Completely forgot about the Recorders office...I'll give that a whirl. Last night fired off a bunch of emails to Long Beach cemeteries trying to find where he is buried. Still waiting for that.

Did have a little bit of luck on the NARA site, for enlistment records. Found name of Roy Meyers Jr.. State and country are right, state born, college, and civilian occupation all match. Enlistment record is something we don't have, so not sure, but it does show he was in the Air Corp at some point. Checked with my mom on the info and she said it sounds right, and at least it has an Army Serial number. If I can locate his medical records or something else to confirm, I will send this back in to NARA.

Do you guys have any way to check Army Serial number against any of your records?

Thanks,

Sgt. Mac ;)
