How would you remove musty smell from F-3?

Hello...Newbie here with a question:
I just purchased an F-3 heated suit, smelled a tad funky when I opened it, but I put it into my storage room for a couple days then went back to look at it further & the whole room had taken on a musty kinda weird smell. No mildew present on the suit that I can see, but it sure has an oder.
I was wondering if it could be some degeneration of the electrical wiring in the suit or the fabric? it has a tinge of oily smell also.
I wanted to ask if I dare put this suit in water to clean it or how else but to just let it air out to get rid of the smell? I have it hanging in the rafters of my garage now airing out.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I would definitely try letting it air out (hang it outside if possible) for a few days.  Keeping it closed up in a closet or a closed-in room won't do a lot for airing it out. I don't think washing or soaking it in water would be a good idea at this point, especially if it has any age.

Direct sunshine might also help if it is a mildew issue.

Whenever I get a WWII uniform that smells a bit musty I hang it in the garage and point a fan towards it on high. It usually helps to air it out AND more importantly keeps it safely inside and out of the elements (birds, insects, freak rainstorms!) while still getting the job done.

I am not quite sure how you are to completely take the smell off but as it goes with suits, you first have to identify what things is causing the unpleasant smell.  If in case that is caused by the fact that the fabric used itself is causing it, that would be tougher to take out. But in any case, you just have to make sure that you do whatever you have done with it, in ease.

oandersen thanks for the advice, I have it in pretty good shape now, aired it out for about 10 days, sprayed it down with fabric freshener, then I just gave up & tossed the pants in the washer for 10 minutes with detergent. They are good to go now & the jacket seems to have recovered with just the air & fabric freshener.
