How Did Forces Arrive?
-
07/15/2008 12:13:50 AM
My grandfather arrived in the European Campaign on Sept. 4 1943, on his 214 papers it said he left for the campaign I think it was around August 24, I am curious if he took a boat to the campaign and if so how could I find maybe a ship manafest to se what ship he was on, if at all possible. Thanks Robbie

Robbie, In 1953, someone in the hiarchy decided for the security of our nation, all troop movement ship manifests from WWII must be destroyed, duh!!. A few people since that time have begun rebuilding the manifests to help people like yourself. You have a good timeline for when he went over and to continue the search you will need the outfit he served with. I cant find the WEB site address for the troop ship manifests, but someone with it, may come along to help you or just go onto "google" and type in "US troop ship manifests WWII", I've tried this a couple of time and it works. Look for ship departures for your grand dads time frame and what troops, Div. etc sailed at that time. The manifests are not complete yet.
Fair Winds and following seas. John, (GM 3/C USS Frost DE 144) Kin to LT. John W. Farnkopf 15th AAF, 52 FG, 4th FS; Madna, Italy MIA 11/11/44 remains found 12/8/53

Robbie, As many troops embarked on the Cunard Queens you might try contracting Cunard to see if they might have ship manifests? Interesting that the Queens were so fast they transited the Atlantic unescorted except when near points of departure/arrival when they had to slow down anyway. HMS Curacoa was an anti-aircraft cruiser escort that ran afoul of the Queen Mary due to missed signals (see attached). Andy [image]local://10103/AF028285A52E4426BD10C5E7130F3D9B.JPG[/image]

http://ww2troopships.com/index.html I was able to find the ship I went to Australia on in Jan. '42 and the ship I came home on from the P.I. in Mar. '45 on the above site. Good Luck. Jack

SEAWEEDS is a good place to start. Through various sources I have found not only the name of the ship which carried my dad to the PTO, I have found the name of the ship which carried him from Nooemfoor to Leyte.

Sorry guys but this one Icould not resist. A long story made short…our crew flew overseas to North Africa in Oct. ’43 via ATC to join the 12thAF. Itseems we broke our brand new GI issue cannon totin’ G model B-25 on a low-leveltraining mission around Greenville, NC. We had a lotof those low-level missions and our pilot was very good at flying low…so muchso that when we brought back several feet of telephone wire in a wing tip wewere on our way to the war in short order. Then in September of ’44after completing 68 combat missions, I was on my way home from Naples. At the repple depple I was handed a carbine, bayonet, ammo, and GI helmet and was sent to the Lambert Cadwalader, a big gray Liberty Shipto guard German prisoners being shipped to the US of A. It seemed like therewere 5,000 of them but probably the number was 500 based on information aboutLiberty Ships. Our small convoy caughtthe tail end of a hurricane while crossing and we arrived in New York after a rough crossing and lots of seasick prisoners. Robbie…your avatar ( sp?) isthe 12 AF patch…in what outfit was your grandfather involved ? G. Underwood 310/381

Primary aircrews of course flew over via the north or south ferry routes. Secondary aircrews and unassigned airman, along with the ground echelon would have gone by boat. Dad went over on a converted liner The USS Wakefield. Going home after VE day however many ground crewmen did fly with the aircrews.
