Help with 30th BG info about 21 Oct 44 B-24 loss over Yap? - 11/26/2005 10:02:35 AM
Hello:

I’m trying to compile a comprehensive list and documentation regarding all American aircraft lost over or near Yap Island. Does anyone happen to have a more detailed account (or the MACR file) regarding the 30th BG, & 293rd BS B-24 lost on 21 October 1944? I have requested the MACR from the Maxwell AFB Archives, however, it might take a number of weeks to arrive.

  • MACR 9750, 21 October 1944, 7th AF, 30th BG, & 293rd BS

  • 40557 (30th BG, 293rd BS) lost in raid over Yap atoll

  • I would greatly appreciate any help. Please post a reply here or email webmaster@missingaircrew.com.

It looks like this plane was lost near Iwo Jima and not Yap…

The “USAAF Serial Numbers” web site at http://home.att.net/~jbaugher/1944_4.html list the following information:

40557 (30th BG, 293rd BS) lost in raid over Yap atoll, Oct 21, 1944,  MACR 9750
I requested and received MACR report #9750 for AC# 40557 thinking it was a Yap Island loss, however, the report shows that the plane was lost 3 miles off of Iwo Jima and not Yap. I have posted the MACR report in a PDF file format at the following URL: http://www.MissingAirCrew.com/pdf/9750_21oct44.pdf

I’m assuming some of the AAF records are in error regarding the loss of the Barnsley crew flying the Miss Fit. Please let me know if anyone has any additional information.

In addition, please send me an email at webmaster@missingaircre.com if anyone has ANY information about aircraft lost over or near Yap Island. I’m trying to put together a comprehensive list of all aircraft lost on Yap before we return to search the island once again next fall.
