Help please - Searching for my dad's info B-25 1060th
-
02/12/2007 10:50:54 AM
Hello, I'm new to this forum, but looks like a great tool to help get info on my deceased father's service as a B-25 t gunner in WWII. I'd like to find out his squad and bomber group, learn more about his missions, and if there are surviving crew families, I've got a couple of dad's 'team photos' that they might like. Here's what I've got -- Dad's discharge papers w/ AAF serial #. He was attached to the 1060th, flew in the No Apennines and Po Valley campaigns. Shot down around 4/19/45 (he told me his stories about parachuting). Discharged 12/1945. Also, a photo of dad and his squad in front of "Bear Hutch" #GW4 on right side of cockpit. I've been searching web for B-25 crew rosters, but no luck yet. Having his group and squad #'s would be more effective I believe. Any help you may provide would be appreciated. Jack's Son, Brian

Mike, I appreciate your reply. His name was Jack Loy. I searched the MACR database around the time dad got his purple heart, and found MACR 14066. Perhaps I can find that MACR and crew roster in the Forum. Otherwise I'll order it (e.g I found accident-report.com, but don't know it's reliability/ security). Also, I'm curious as to why there are "zero" MACR reports for 321 and 340 groups after early April 1945. I appreciate your help. Thank you. Brian Loy

Brian , accident - report is ok. They charge a fee but you get it quicker. you can contact them and ask if his name on report. Free copy of MACRs lynn.gamma@maxwell.af.mil Make sure you have right MACR # MACRs usually not filed if A/C went down in Friendly Territory. If there were KIA , there would be IDPF or Casualty Report. By April 45 , War was almost over. Medium Bombers were starting to stand down. Mike

The reference to the 1060th is probably to the unit he was discharged from, the 1060th AAF Base Unit, which was a personnel redistribution center at Greensboro AAB NC. There was no bomber unit numbered that high.

Thank you Mike. I sent email to Lynn requesting MACR report. I'll contact Accident-Report to see if dad's name was on list. Brian

Greetings, Brian! Your dad was a tail gunner in the 380th Squadron of the 310th Bomb Group. You can view the digitized 380th Squadron History files online in the 310th BG page at http://57thbombwing.com. Mission Report #502, which lists your dad's fellow crew members, can be found on sheet 47 of the 380th's April 1945 history file. To learn more about your dad's service and his brothers-in-arms, I recommend that you join the 57th Bomb Wing Association. Best regards, VJ White

Go to http://57thbombwing.com Click on the 310th Bomb Group Insignia to go to the 310th BG history page: http://57thbombwing.com/310thHistory.php Scroll down. Toward the bottom of the 310th page, you'll find links to the four squadron histories (379th, 380th, 381st, 428th). Click on the 380th insignia icon to view the 380th squadron histories: http://57thbombwing.com/380thSquadronHistory.php Click on "HistoryApr45" to view the April 1945 squadron history file (Right click and Save to download it to your PC). Sheet 47 lists that fateful mission. Best regards, VJ White

VJ White, Thank you!!! Found him. I've got a photo of he and his squad in front of "Bear Hutch" GW4 B-25. How do I email to you (or whoever)? It's in PDF format (I scanned photograph). [this email would only allow me to embed/upload JPG files]. Brian

Jim, I don't have first names of other crew members. But I do have photograph of them all in front of their bomber. If you'd like photo, I have PDF file and need your email to send it to (this email system won't allow me to upload PDF -- unless I'm using it wrong...) Thank you. Brian

I'm Brian's brother. In addition to what Brian shared, I also have several photos of pilots being awarded DFCs and other medals and I think a crew picture. We don't know any of the men in the photos but perhaps someone else might recognize themselves or a relative. I'm sure they must be from the 310th BG. Where would be a good place to post the pictures that gets a lot of visibility? I'd hate to keep mementos like these to myself when someone else might recognize them.
