Help identifyP-47 - 06/17/2008 06:01:09 PM
This is my dad in the cockpit of a P-47.  I know he was with the 69FS, 58FG.  The background suggests the philippines near the end of the war.  Does anyone recognise the plane of have any other information?

Jim    I think more likely a training base in the States ( it's a very early D-model ); by the time they got to the Philippines they had later models mostly unpainted with their colour markings.              Regards   Nick

PS  looks like the last 4 numbers of the serial are stencilled on the u/c door but can't read them.
( but it may be " (NO) STEP " ! )

James,

Perhaps it helps a bit if you can share your dad's name with us?

There was a P-47D "Dotty" (42-75210), but this one flew with 359th FG in Europe...

My dads name is Hugh Cobb, Jr. and his nickname was "Chick".  He was an armorer.

Nick,  you could be right about it being a stateside training base.  I think the 69th transitioned to P-47's just before they went over seas but for some reason, I think they were still flying some of their original a/c when they got to the Philippines.  The main reason I think this photo was taken in the Philippines is that my dad appears rather thin in the photo, compared to other photos taken either just before or just after he went over and had  been in New Guinea immediately before going to the Philippines.
