Help for information on T/Sgt Paul Sattler - 03/16/2006 10:30:18 PM
I am searching for information on the crash that killed my Uncle T/Sgt Paul Sattler assigned to the 14th TCS.  the crash took place after a mid air collision near Barkston Heath AB on 18 Dec 44.  According to the chaplain's letter to my grandparents he was in a mid air collision.  Checking the Cambridge American Cemetarylisting there are three other airmen from the squadron killed on that day including a LTC Lewis Fredrick Jr.  He was the squadron C.O. on D-Day and I wonder if he was still the C.O. at the time of the crash.   I've recently started to work with a group trying to resor our old WW2 base as a museum and have started to wonder about the service career and death of my uncle.  Thanks for any help

Paul
There is a great deal of info on this crash. I'll give you the cliff note version, as my typing is horrible.

Each squadron had a B24 that they used to haul gas. They were flying what they refer to as transition flying. I have no idea what that meant.
The entire group was watching when the planes got too close and clipped wings.

There may be more info as I will look again soon.                                          This info was provided me by an eye witness a couple of years ago.

To get the whole story, we may need to talk on the phone. It will likely take a while.

Lt Colonel Frederick was the C.O. at the time of the crash. He was replaced by Major Thomas Cargill, who was killed in March 45.

Let me know how I can help further.
Take Care

Randy

HI Randy;

Thanks for the post on the crash I would definately like to talk with you.  The family tradition had it that Paul was killed in a C-54, it must we way off.  If you can please email me your phone number I'll give you a call. I'm not certain when I'll get a chance to call I'm real busy this week (gotta get the income tax done) and this weekend I've been ordered to Washington D.C. for a 2 week detail.  Maybe I can call you from there or it might be after the 15th when I get home.  Just the same thanks for the information
