Help Please!
-
11/18/2003 02:03:45 AM
My father, Ray Thirouin, was with the 7th AAF in 1944 as a mechanic. He had some pictures of nose art that I'd like to identify where it was, a B-29 "Poison Ivy" with an F on the nose, and a C-47 "Hot Cargo". Also, there was a B-24 the only id number is "474" on the nose. Any help?

I have a reference to a 44-40474 LITTLE QUEEN MARY of the 5th Bomb Group which would have been in the area when the B-29s were there. This may be her. The numbering on the nose is also a "trademark" of the 5BG. If you could post/email a scan of the pic it might help in the ID.
Cheers
Pete

The physical characteristics if this aircraft indicate that it is either :
44-41474 B-24L-5-CO, for which I have no other info, or,
44-42474 B-24M-35-CO again, I have no further info.
There is nothing that is evident that would enable a researcher to distinguish between the two serials.
At least we now have a photo of her, and can place her in the Pacific.
Can you tell me anything more about her. Interestingly, (although it is not necessarily relevant, ), a number of other aircraft in the 44-414xx "block" were assigned to the 11th BG which, like the 5th, tended to mark the noses of their a/c with the "last 3" of the serial number.
Afraid, I can't offer much more than that as a surmise without further info.
Cheers
Pete
