Great Ashfield 1944 ovelay for Google Earth
-

I found this neat link. It’s a 1944 aerial overlay of Great Ashfield for Google Earth. http://www.gearthhacks.com/dlfile26677/RAF-Great-Ashfield-airfield-in-April-1944.htm Went into Google Earth and then opened a separate window with this link. Click on ‘Earth’ under the photo and it magically overlays the 1944 shot over the present day map. The 1944 photos doesn’t have all the accommodation sites buts its quite nice. (The site where it comes from has lots of interesting overlays. If you look at the overlays for Poland for instance there’s some of the 8th AF bombing, Marienburg for instance). Hours of fun. Thanks for the overlay Paul! I just ran across some really cool overlays for Normandy as well. Omaha Beach was really enlightening! I don't have the link but do a Google search and you'll find them. Mike

Thanks for pointing out the overlay. It installed very easily and really helps bring things into view, and gives a perspective to how the airfield was laid out.
Thanks a lot, Lin Weikert

Thanks for the overlay. My Dad was at Great Ashfield with the 385th BG 549th squadron. Been trying to do research on his time there and this is really nice to have. Any information on this group, in particular Van Durrant or Homesick Angel or Angel"s Sister would be greatly appreciated. Connie

Angel's Sister was 43-38210. It was assigned to Great Ashfield on 4th August 1944. According tp The B17 Flying Fortress Story it was lost in a mid air collicion over the North Sea on 4th April 1945, 9 KIA, MACR 13720. Someone I know saw the crash and wrote to me: .....the plane leading the low element (3 aircraft) was flying below and slightly being the plane leading the low section (6 aircraft). He got too far forward (too much throttle) and instsead of just reducing speed to fall back he reduced the throttle and was looking up and pulled his aircraft right up into the other one... The two were inextricably meshed together and both spun down into the ocean as one. The pilot of the section lead (on top), last name was Crimmins, had the presence of mind and the self-discipline to report via radio to the group leader that his aircraft was "aborting" ...The navigator on the bottom crew--his name was Bill Simmons-- (pilot's name was Ritchie) ..... In Bill Varnedoe's book are pictues of both Angel's Sister and Homesick Angel. Paul
