Dearest Linda,
I'd like to be of some assistance concerning 2nd Lt Glenn E. Chapman, Service number 0-760245 USAAF, lost on 08/10/44.
The incident revolved around his aircraft clipping a tree whilst coming off straffing a motor dispersal area one half mile north of Kaoe. The aircraft crashed approximately one mile off the coast from Kaoe in shallow water.
In 1948 an RAAF Search Party inspected the wreckage with the help of local divers who dragged a substanital part of the wreckage to the beach and resulting in identification of the wreckage c/ n
On the left vertical stabiliser was a peculiar design and a large number "8" (no other details)
Now,..if anyone can convert the Lockheed Serial number to a USAAF FY number, it would be real nice and helpful to advise the comparible number as follows: Lockheed#2922-035
That'll be the answer you would like to hear, along with the squadron number of #8 ( though I think this should be greater,..GRB) Not to mention I'd like to know as well.
I'll keep my eyes open for more for you.
Best and high regards
Gordy
