Frostbite Qualifies The Purple Heart Medal I/A/W - 03/22/2007 11:10:30 AM
"On recall and while over the North Sea/Channel, all instruments were frozen and inoperative.
When the bombs were salvoed, they exploded, causing severe damage to the bottom of the
aircraft. Due to the overcast, the crew was not aware of the altitude, and were very close to the
sea. Lt. McDonald was so badly frozen that he was taken off combat status and re-assigned as
Assistant Armament Officer. On 18 January 1945 he was transferred to 2nd Air Division
headquarters."

How do I contact James R. McDonald to see if he was awarded the Purple Heart for frostbite?  Regulations authorized such wounds since 1943/1944. Robert

Could you please post the regulations regarding Frostbite and the Purple Heart?  My father-in-law's feet were frostbitten during the Battle of the Bulge and I would like to see if he would also qualify.

Thanks in advance

Jerry,

Frostbite was classified a wound until 23 August 1951.  After that date, it was classified as an accident.  To meet circumstances required for the Purple Heart, one must contact frostbite one of two ways..
1.  During combat, and experience severe frostbite.
2.  During captivity, any level of severity.        I have provided abbreviated descriptions followed by the Army Regulations.  Also, the Public Law 104-106, the initial authorization for former POWs held prior to 1962 that were wounded during captivity or while being taken captive.  http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v191/Robersabel/AR%20600-45%20TABS%201%20%20And%202/c14cafe9.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v191/Robersabel/AR%20600-45%20TABS%201%20%20And%202/054a2c44.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v191/Robersabel/AR%20600-45%2023%20September%201943/AR600-4523September194303.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v191/Robersabel/AR%20600-45%203%20May%201944/AR600-453May194401.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v191/Robersabel/Public%20Law%20104-106/PublicLaw104-106.jpg        Your father-in-law must have documents (medical records) showing the severe frostbite.  Please advise if you experience problems accessing. Robert E.
