Mr. Mucha,
I believe this is my grandfather's plane. He (Clint Moulds -- Mississippi, USA) was the radio man on a plane called the "Frivolous Sal" with the 452nd BG flying from Deopham Green airfield in England. I recall him telling me that he and his crew crash landed in Poland when they were very near to completing their required # of missions (sorry I don't know dates or mission destinations). He told me the Polish underground luckily recovered them before the Germans, took their weapons (so they wouldn't get trigger-happy) then took them through the lines to the Russians where they eventually made there way to Kiev.

I hope I got the details right -- but am sorry I don't know who flew the plane.

Drear Mr. Nagy:

Thank you very much for your kind reply.

There was "Frivolous Sal" #43-37542 of the 452nd BG that crashed or landed on March 19, 1945.

I have heard 3 crewmen were KIA and 6 became POWs. I have not found Clint Moulds on the crew list.

Could you possibly give me more information to trace your grandfather, please?

Best Regards,
Mike Mucha

Thanks for all the good info.

Just spoke with my mother -- she confirmed my story but gave additional details that may help. The B-17 (sorry don't know the number) Clint Moulds was in that day needed to make an emergnecy landing for some reason and the gear would not come down, the pilot landed it on the belly. No one was injured. Condsidering this it looks like the plane my grandpa was in may have been the  "42 - 97901   729th Sq. Landed Radomsk , Poland 3/19/45" plane shooshoobaby lists.
I asked about the pilot of this plane -- my mother did not have a name but mentioned that my grandfather said he drank quite a bit and so the co pilot flew the plane a lot. The crew never said anything about the pilot's drinking.
I will try to call my grandpa sometime soon to see what he remembers.

Frank:

There were two ships of the 452nd BG that landed in Russian-occupied Poland on March 19, 1945.

#42-97901 with Lt. Richard J. Koprowicz's crew - belly landed near Radomsko
#43-38231 with Lt. Warren I. Knox's crew - belly landed near Witkowo

Both crews returned via the Soviet Union, but I have no found name of your grandfater among names of the crewmen.

Regards,
Mike

Frank,

If you have any dates that cover when your Grandfather would have been assigned to the 452d, it would be very helpful.

Thank You
