Hello I am looking for information re Fred Zellman's Mustang in particular the aircraft he might have been flying 13th Jan 1945. (479th FG - 436FS). I know its a "tall order" but any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Mike - Can't find info on Zellman except for early P - 38. Try Peter Randall at www.littlefriends.co.uk.
The 479th Came out with a big History Book a few years ago - maybe find it at East Anglia Books.
Did you ever find info on the 34th B - 17 ?

Thanks for looking up information for me. Delivered today -  a copy of Terry Fairfield's copy of "The 479th Fighter Group In World War II"............ phew what a book!! Importantly for me it told the story of 13th Jan 1945 in some detail, except for the aircraft Lt. Fred Zellman was flying, in fact there is no mention that he was allocated a specific a/c. Saying that though I cannot praise the book high enough. I will post this information as a "closure" to my earlier request. F/O Raymond King was NOT escorting a B17 but a colleague from his own squadron back to England - Lt. Fred Zellman.
I'd love to know the ID of that Mustang that Fred Zellman was flying that day!  If I take a guess at which a/c he was flying sure enough, as soon as I show the finished painting someone will tell me how wrong I am!!
That book (mentioned above) has sure clocked up some miles. Printed in China for a US company and contains a large amount of photos credited to a museum not 5 miles away from me here in the UK. I am waiting for one of the museum staff to return from a holiday who knows a lot about this incident - in fact he saw it happen. Prior to his holiday I arranged to meet him April 8th, and I'll be asking him a LOT of questions!
