Found remains..
-
01/16/2008 11:18:11 AM
On August 7 1946 the remains of 2LT Richard W. Taylor (363FS) were found in the wreckage of his P-51D 44-14768 (crashed on February 23 1945 in my village of Castricum) by members of the 608th QM.GR.Co. under command of 1LT William H. Ewing who signed the Report of Investigation (Area Search) as well a a Dutch contract civilian Mr. H. Schiphorst. The remains were taken to Neuville-en-Condroz, Belgium on that same day from where they were brought home after being disinterred on November 17 1948. The Disinterment Directive gives the condition of remains at the time but is it possible to find out what remains were found by the 608th QM.GR.Co.? Any information is much appreciated ! Paul

The IDPF or Individual Deceased Personnel File may be what you need.

The problem with Graves Registration is, they list someone as recovered and you even have a grave, but that does not mean you won't find remains. More often then not, these folks would recover remains from a German grave and maybe do a surface dig at the crash site, but not dig out the whole plane. We had a crash-site where a German AA crew burried part of the pilot and then a few days later, when the area was occupied by US troops the conducted a surface dig and recovered some more human remains, which were sent to a collection point/cemetery. Later the remains that the Germans burried were moved to the same site and burried as an unknown. Sometime later, someone figured out that maybe the two graves were one and the same person and they established a match. Even then, according to the IDPF, they only ever recovered 25-50% of the pilot. I wish we had the IDPF prior to the dig, it would have prevented an unpleasant surprise for us all.
