Final Resting Place of 42-5843 547 BS - 01/25/2008 01:03:45 AM
I have now asceratined who shot down 2/Lt Ralph Pulcipher's 'Black Ghost' on 6 Sep 43.  Although thew crew baled out close to Beauvais, the final resting place of the B-17 is not certain apart from it did not land in the Oise Department of France.  I do know that 1/Lt Russell Faulkiner's 'Lucky Thirteen' of 546th BS did come down at Clermont but where exactly did Ralph's plane crash at his ball turret gunner would like to know!

The loss of A/C 42-5843 is covered in MACR 1455.  May want to request.

Chris,

The MACR for #42-5843 has a statement from Thomas E. Furrey T/SGT on the flight that the plane went down 10 km. west of Beauvis, France apparently from a lack of fuel.  It is the only reference in the MACR as to where the plane went down.

Chris, if you do obtain a copy, I would appreciate a pdf scan of it so I can add it to the 384th MACR list.

Thanks,
f3

This MACR is posted on footnote.com.  Attached is the first page which states that the crash location is unknown.

Bonjour Bernard,

Voici ce que j'ai trouvé.

Phil ( in belgium)

20. Sgt. Willard MacLain, 17088525 – American
From a Flying Fortress named “Black Ghost” A/C 42-5843 which fell on the 6th of September 1943 near Poves (Somme).  MIA on a mission to Stuttgart.  Four evaded and six POW MACR 1455, 384 BG 547 BS.  On the order of the chief of the BOA (Oise), he was guided by me from Criel to Chauny on 14th September and immediately placed at my home where they stayed until the 29th of September when they left for Paris guided by “Georges”.  According to an un-verifiable source he was captured at the Spanish frontier and put in the prison at Rennes.

Supporting Phil's posting:

www.conscript-heroes.com/Art24-Chauny.html

"S/Sgt Willard MacLain was crewman on 547/BS B-17 'Black Ghost' which was shot down 6 September near Boves (Somme). MacLain was brought back to Chauny by Dromas and hidden at his home until 29 September when he left for Paris with the three 'Lucky Thirteen' crew and 'Georges'. It is believed that MacLain may have been captured at the Spanish frontier and held in prison at Rennes. Three other crewmen from the 'Black Ghost' are also believed to have evaded."
