Fate of B-24 44-50950? - 03/19/2005 09:01:07 PM
Does anyone know of the fate of this aircraft?

44-50950

It was a Ford B-24M, left the US on April 19th 1945.

The Son of Isaac website shows this tail number as a 30th BG aircraft, and lists it as lost, but no supporting info, date or MACR is provided. I don't see a MACR for this serial through this website.

Thanks,
Matt

Matt,

Joe Baugher's site lists 44-50950 as being condemned salvage obsolete, 0ct 20, 1945.

That's true. Almost all of them wound up being scrap. I guess I should have been more specific.

What I wanted to know was whether this was really a 30th BG ship, and was it lost during the war.

Dick Mansfield's 30th BG history lists 44-50950 as being assignned to the 30th BG. But, he does not list any squadron info.

Matt,

Per Vic's "...lists 44-50950 as being condemned salvage obsolete, 0ct 20, 1945." as opposed to being written off as "lost due to enemy action" with a date before VE-Day, I'd venture a guess that your 950 lived on past VE-DAY?

Boy, I am just not getting it, am I?

OK, so the ship was recycled (not lost) in October. Basically, can anyone verify whether this ship really went to the 30th BG? Dick Mansfield's site does indeed list this serial, just looking for an independent confirmation.

I have a standing request with NASM for the IARC production codes - I was hoping for a quick and cheap answer from someone. I am trying to narrow the list of possible serials to my father's B-24. We have it whittled down to less than 5 possible serials.
