F-5 Crash site ? - 12/08/2006 12:55:36 PM
Is there any one out there from the 3rd Photo recce Group that can add anything relative to an F-5 loss
on Aug. 25, 1944 in NE Italy/Austria?  Searchers have found wreckage they think might be MACR 7995.

Their quote-- p38 crash Brunico-San Lorenzo

MACR #   Date      A/C Type   Serial #   Group
7995      8/25/1944     F-5       42-13309        3
1st FG(71st FS)-15TH AF-Class 44-C

7743 is the Lockheed construction number. for 42-13309
There might be parts of the wreckage that contain that number stamped in paint...construction number can identify an aircraft.

As you know this was a very busy time for recce just 10 days after D-Day southern France (August 15, 1944), so it makes sense to me.  Other F-5 losses from the 3rd Photographic Reconnaissance Group around that time were:

8008
 8/16/1944
 F-5
 42-13310
 3

8009
 8/20/1944
 F-5
 42-68251

 3/20/1944
 F-5
 42-67355

 5/10/1944

Of course Exupery went down in the sea on July 27, 1944 but since he was in the 2/33 Reconnaissance French squadron, I guess there is no MACR for him(?)

Anyone know the group and squadron insignia for the 3rd PG?
