John Lambert's book, "the 14th Fighter Group in World War II" shows a photo of Lt. Campbell's plane. It is painted OD with lighter, probably blue or gray underneath. It bears a within squadron number 75 in yellow on the nose with "Earthquake McGoon" in small upper case white lettering over the 5 of 75, and has seven victories painted in front of the 7 of 75. The first three in a row of five are swasticas followed by the symbol for an Italian kill, and then another swastica. Below the last swastica is another barely overlapping the downward slanting stroke of the 7. Each is within a white disc. Just in front of the wing root are fifteen (I think) yellow bombs in a row. A painting of the same plane shows in John Stanaway's "P-38 Lightning Aces of the ETO/MTO" is in agreement with the photo except that shows five kill discs and they are all the Italian kill symbol. It refers to North Africa, august 1943 and is a P-38G-15. Neither show a serial number. Paul

Correction: There are six not seven victory symbols, which is in agreement with the number listed for Lt Campbell in Stanaway's book. paul

Thanks Paul How do you know about the colors? I made this profile..so far all in white... BUT the plane with number 73 , which should be similar to 75 of E.McGoon has white (?) wingtip and double colored propeller spinner (white/red) or (white yellow)? I think that the color of back part of spinner is identical with the outline of US insignia on the fuselage...Any idea why they draw insignia with rectangular shape on profile? was that one in use or just yellow/red outlined one that time?I think it was still 12.AF regards and thanks

Peter, I haven't seen a color photograph of his plane but the Stanaway book color rendition shows different colors than the profile you posted. It also shows the spinner to OD and no white wingtips. It looks like the rectangular tabs the are on some of the planes insignia on either side of the star in the circle started in mid-year. I don't have the time at the moment but later I'll dig a bit deeper. My cousin, Lt. Lothrop F. Ellis flew with the 49th FS of the 14thFG. I've never been able to find out these details of his plane. HI Paul, I know the profile...but it is easy to copy someones drawing without asking IS IT REALLY SO? that is why I added photo of plane 73, juts two digits less from McGoons 75, the same squadron. I doubt that there would be such a difference among two planes in one squadron, Speaking about insignia and usage of colors...? That is why I opened this question...I found out a lot of color profiles to be nicely drawn but historically very inaccurate...So I rather believe myself and check all twice, than rellying on someones drawing;) Thanks for your input ...
