EDO A-3 lifeboats and SB-29 - 01/28/2008 03:00:29 PM
Hi,
I'm interested in the story of EDO A-3 lifeboats.
Brewster Daniels mentions 100 A-3 built.
Looking for the A-3 in the www - but can't find much info or photos.
Anybody out there able to give a hint?
I know that the National Museum of the United States Air Force has one ex. A-3 603.
And the remaining 99?

Thanks for any assistance.
Martin

Not sure about the A-3, but below is a link to a series of 6 photos of a Higgins A-1 Airborne Rescue Boat being dropped from a B-17.  Taken by photographer in tail of another B-17, shows from moment of release to hitting the water. I would have just posted them, but the site says they are copyrighted.

When I visited the museum last summer I saw the lifeboat they are restoring.  It was in the same restoration hanger as the Memphis Belle.  If I remember correctly, it almost seams like they actually had two of them, and they were using parts from one to restore the other, but I could be wrong about that.

Hi Gary,
thanks for posting the two pics
Do you have an explanation why there are many A-1 docs and only a few A-3 ?

You're welcome for the photos.  Sorry, but that's about the extent of my knowledge of A-3 boats.    Just happened to have a document from Edwards AFB on drag & climb tests of the SB-29A which had those photos in it.

Martin,

Don't know the numbers but as to why there were more A-1s than A-3s might be because there were more SB-17s than SB-29s?

Andy,

approximitely 130 B17G were converted to carry the A-1 lifeboats (B17H / TB17H) and approximitely 300 A-1 were built.
