Does anybody know what ship HR 945 refers to?

I have been researching my grandfather's WWII history and have been able to get copies of many of the morning reports from his unit, the 444th Bomb Group.  Several of the morning reports mention being at sea on HR 945 and one dated 12 Feb 43 indicated they embarked on HR 945 for overseas shipment from Newport News, Virginia.  A later report dated 11 March 43 indicates they left staging area #2 in Oran and travelled by motor convoy 20 kilometers to Oran Harbor where they boarded the SS Champoleon.  Another report indicates they were docked in the Harbor of Naples on 15 Mar 43 where they underwent an aerial bombardment at approx 0130 lasting 20 minutes.  I am trying to find what ship HR 945 refers to - it seems they boarded the SS Champoleon at Oran, but what ship took them from Newport News to Oran?  Also, does anybody know anything about the aerial bombardment they faced?

Any input would be appreciated...

HR945 looks to be a convoy number not a ship

Thanks for the suggestion.  Doing a search using the link to the site you included does not list any convoy beginning with HR but it may not be all inclusive.  Does anybody else have any ideas on how to further research this?

I do not understand the dates and Bomb Group information you are posting.  Naples was not liberated until 1 OCT 1943.  Anyone "docked" in the harbor of Naples, Italy  on 15  MAR 43 would have been with the Axis forces.  The 444th Bomb Group was a very heavy bomb group operating B-29s from India and later Tinian against Japan.    What am I missing here????

HR945 does not refer to a single ship.It is a convoy number. A convoy could consist of a few ships to hundreds. Many ships formed up at Newport news, a lot from Gulfport States. My guess because of the odd number (larger convoys had HX, SC,ON, etc) and the fact that he must have been on a troop carrier, only a few fast ships in the convoy. Troops were usually carried over on fast ships that could out run the slower U-Boat. I've got a list of a lot of convoys, but HR945 is not amongst them.
I recall there was a unit or two that passed through Italy and ended up in the far east.

I suggest you give the web master on the convoy site an e-mail see if he can help

Convoys were numbered odd for ships going East (ie going to England) even for outbound (ie to USA)

This website does have a few H numbered conboys listed, but I assume HR stands for Newport News

Cheers

Sorry for that - too many dates.  It was 1944, not 1943.
I am trying to track the movements of my grandfather and his units.  Here is the path I've been able to trace by reading through morning reports.  I have a number of questions and if anybody can help answer or fill in any blanks please do.
*1 Aug 43 679th B.S. Davis Monthan Field, Tuscon Az, entrained to travel to Great Bend, KS.
*3 Aug arrived Great Bend
Then no mention in morning reports until 5 Dec 43 when my grandfather and other members of the 679th are transferred to the 8th Bomb Maint Sqd and the 679th deactivated????  Why did they deactivate?
*12 Feb 44 From Camp Patrick Henry, VA  arrive at Newport News, VA by rail and embark on HR 945 for overseas shipment with 14 officers and 338 enlisted men.
Then there are a few unreadable pages.  Next:
*10 Mar 44 Left staging area #2 Oran atchd Natousa at approx 1400 and traveled by motor convoy 20km to Oran.  Boarded SS Champoleon in Oran Harbor.  Boarded Champoleon here - I'm trying to find what ship brought him from Newport News.
Where was staging area 2 and what/where is Natousa?
*11 Mar 44 aboard SS Champoleon at sea.  Left Oran Harbor approx 1930.
*14 Mar 44 docked in harbor of Naples, Italy.
*15 Mar 44 docked in Harbor of Naples, Italy.  Underwent aerial bombardment approx 0130 lasting 20 min.
*16 Mar 44 left Naples at 1830.  Org completed 30 days in Eur. Theatre authorized to wear Eur. Theatre Ribbon.  They were eligible even though they were at sea?
*21 Mar 44 arrived at Port Said 0830.
*22 Mar 44 left Port Said.  Proceeded through Suez Canal and arrived at Suez Bay
*23 Mar 44 left Suez Bay.
*27 Mar 44 arrived at Aden.
*1 Apr 44 arrived at Port of Bombay
*2 Apr 44 debarked and marched to Alexander RR Station and entrained for Camp Darna, Deplali, India.  Where/what was this?
*14 Apr 44 entrained for Charra.  I've read accounts of Charra...
*17 Apr 44 arrived Army Air Field, Charra.
*5 July 44 departed AAF Charra by motor truck convoy arrived AAF Dudhkindi.
*12 Oct 44 deactivated 8th Bomb Maint Sq transferred to HQ 444th BG
"The following named EM now DS at APO 493 B-2 reld from asgd Sq indicated and asgd to HQ 444th BG and will remain at APO 493 B-2".  Where was APO 493 B-2?
*16 Nov 44 Above named EM (including grandfather) fr DY to Temp DY APO 465 approx 3 days departed.  Where was APO 465?
*28 Nov 44 grandfather - Fr Dy to Sk 372nd Sta Hosp APO 493.  Would this have been a transfer or was he hospitalized - I'm not sure how to read all of the abbreviations?
Next morning report mentioning him is :
1 May 45 when he was one of 60 EM atchd to Echelon C fr Dy to DS enroute to join per par 6 SO 63 HQ AAB Apo 215 (secret).  Apo 215 was Dudhkindi - what was Echelon C?
Final morning report is dated 17 Oct 45 where he was in the Ground Echelon HQ 444th BG, Tinian Island, Marianas.
I realize this is lengthy but again, if anybody can answer any of the questions or offer any info please do.

I know I am very good but try this on for size

http://ww2troopships.com/crossings/1944.htm

DATE            DEPART                   NAME OF SHIP                GROUP        CONVOY        PORT           ARRIVAL      REFERENCE
                                                       IN CONVOY                                           NUM          ARRIVAL         DATE
44-02-11   Hampton Roads  VA    Lambert Cadwalader         463rd BG  773rd Sq           ???            Naples,Italy      44-03- 11    History of the  Fighting 463rd

So the date is 1944 not 1943

Comtask Group 2.5 War Diary 2/1 - 29/44 Pg 208  departures from Hampton Roads

Since Lambert Cadwalader listed as departing this convoy, the ship the 444th BG also has to be part of this convoy
