Ditched B-29 in Pacific - 08/27/2008 08:40:03 PM
I am searching for the date when pilot John E. Dougherty ditched a B-29 in the Pacific approx. 120 miles south of Saipan after returning from a long-rage bombing and weather reconnaissance mission.  It was the first B-29 to ditch in which all the crew members survived.

The reason I am interested is because Dougherty told his crew he would land their B-29 in the middle of the Missouri River on August 26, 1944, if they were not given immediate clearance to land at Omaha after experiencing engine failure.  I want to know if his ditching of the B-29 in the Pacific was before or after this incident.  Dougherty had been in combat before and after the Omaha incident.

Thanks,
Jerry

Hello Again Jerry,

Try the following URL which is a biography on BGen John Dougherty.  Page 2 mentions the B-29 ditching with all crew surviving.

Hope this helps.

Take care,
