Re: 22 BS, Tail No. 42-32264
My granduncle served as Pilot and was killed-in-action along with seven crew members on that fateful day in July 1943. The best way I can think of recognizing their service to country is to have them posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. According to written records received from a member of the 22BS, a squadron of three B-25's made an initial bombing run on a Japanese Cruiser, but the B-25 with Tail No. 42-32264 made a second pass and was shot down. Only one crew member received the Distinguished Flying Cross and I believe that was because he flew many more missions than the others. The others received the Air Medal and Purple Heart. I think the sacrifice of one's life in the heat of battle should be the basis for awarding the Distinguished Flying Cross. I intend to pursue the recognition these gallant men deserve. I would like to hear from anyone who has an opinion on this.
