Deployment to England
-
08/19/2006 04:26:04 PM
Can anyone tell me if the 344th Bomb Group ferried their own planes to Stansted, England when they were assigned in Feb. 1944? Some notes in old family papers mention that when my uncle, a navigator with the 495th Bomb Squadron, 344th Bomb Group, went to England he went via South America, Ascension Islands, Dakar Africa, and on to England. Is this the "Southern Route," normally flown in winter? Thanks in advance for the help. Regards, Dave Gorski

Don't know the answer for the 344th, but my father's B-26 group, the 397th, took the Southern route: Hunter Field, GA Morrison Field, West Palm Beach, FL Trinidad, Caribbean Natal, Brazil Ascension Island, Atlantic Ocean Roberts Field, Liberia Dakar (now Senegal, Africa) Marrakech, Morocco Lands End, Southwest England total journey of about 10,850 miles approx. 63 hours flying time

Thanks for the info, that sounds like the route that my uncle took. It's probably safe to assume that the 344th took their aircraft by that same route. Thanks again. Regards, Dave Gorski

My uncle was with the first deployment of the 344th, in February of 1944. My understanding is that in the winter the southern route was taken, and in summer the northern. Makes sense to me that that is why they took the southern route in February. Have the John Dinou book, and have had the opportunity to "speak" to him via e-mail. Super guy, and a good book. Also have "Marauder Man" by Kenneth Brown. Thanks for the suggestion of the book by Jack Havener, I'll look for it. Regards, Dave Gorski

Interesting guy Jack Havener. I knew him well. He apponted himself group historian. Little did we know he was planning his book while flying missions with us. Art Kramer 344bg 494th bs.
