Dale J. Hanks (Need Information)

Hello Everyone!

Great Site!  Thanks for your efforts.

I am searching for information on my grandfather, Dale J. Hanks.  I know very little information about him up to this point.  I do know that he was a B-17 pilot, and his aircraft was called "Hanks Yanks."  I've been told he flew out of Rattlesden, but I have no solid verification of this.

But, I do have this picture (if it helps).  He is top right.

Thanks,
Nicholas Thomas

    Hello Nicholas:

Check out the web page for the 447th Bomb Group (located at Rattlesden).  It can be found at:  www.447bg.com

Once there, go to COMBAT CREWS, then COMBAT CREWS GALLERY and your grandfather's crew photo is on page 3 (scroll down).  It is the same photo you have.

You might want to put a posting on the 447th BG FORUM on this web page.

Haven't found anything on "Hanks Yanks" yet, but it is late.

    Good luck on your quest.

    Nicholas,

Small world.  A number of years ago I met a man named Gregory Pons.  He told me that he had purchased a photo album belonging to Allen J. Miller who was the navigator in your grandfathers crew.  He sent me copies of the contents with the stipulation that they were not for publication so I can not post them here.  I do not remember how he came upon this album but I have his e-mail address in Paris which may still be current.  I will PM you with that address in the hope that you will be able to contact Mr. Pons directly.  The copy that he sent me contained 15 photos and 6 documents including Miller's complete list of missions.  I assume that most of what is in this album would also apply to your grandfather.

I am very excited to have come across this. They are infancy "hanks yanks." my granddaddy was your granddaddy's ball turret gunner. He is in the bottom left of this picture and his name is Richard carne.

Josh, Nicholas, Lucky, in the photo above the man standing on the upper left is my uncle Leslie F. Lund. I've been told that he flew on at least 2 missions as co-pilot with this crew. On 7/13/44 to Munich and on 7/18/44 to Cuxhaven. I would like to hear/see any other information you may acquire.

Lucky/Hal, would you be able to send me copies of any photos or documentation from Mr. Pons that contained references to my uncle?

    aglund,
There is nothing in the Pons material that mentions your uncle.  For the most part I have already supplied whatever material I have in your other thread regarding Milk Wagon.  I will re-check to see if I have anything further for you.

From your post on the Milk Wagon thread:
Does anybody have a picture of Lt. Dale Hanks. The reason I ask is because in looking on the 447th site I came across what is suppose to be the Hanks crew. I'm about 99.999% sure that the person identified as Mr. Hanks is actually my uncle.
    Hanks crew, 708th
    Rattlesden, undated
    (As assigned Apr 18, 1944)
    Lt Dale J. Hanks
    Lt Allen J. Miller
    Lt James L. Liakos
    Sgt Vincent D. Bartilucci
    Sgt John M. Comeay
    Sgt Jerome R. Farey
    Sgt Inocencio A. Vargas
    Sgt Grady L. Hawk
    Cpl Richard F. Carne
If you look more closely at the caption on the 447th web site you will notice that only three of the four officers are identified.  I know for certain that the third from the left is Miller, the first post in this thread identifies the man on the right as Hanks.  This leaves the two men on the left to be correctly identified.  I cannot identify the enlisted members of that crew in that picture but clearly there are more enlisted names than people.

Officer portion of photo attached below.  If the man on the left is in fact your uncle would you have any idea about the inscription on the lower left side of his jacket?  Appears to start with quotation mark then the letter R.

I've emailed my cousins to see if they may remember that. He did fly at least a couple missions on "Round Trip". I don't know what his main A/C was although his LB certificate says Milk Wagon. I also don't know if having A/C names on jackets was done at Rattlesden. The officer on the far right is Hanks who I believe was career Air Force (google Col. Dale Hanks). The Hanks blog has a relative of Richard Carne saying he is lower left.

    Thanks

There is a small but possibly significant cue in the photo of the officers.  Notice that the man on the right who we think is Hanks has the connector plug for his headphones over his left shoulder and the man on the left has his connector plug over his right shoulder.  Looking at the cockpit diagram for a B-17 it appears that the interphone connector box is on the outside wall, namely, to the pilot's left and to the co-pilot's right.  If this is a valid interpretation it would support the man on the right being the pilot, Hanks, and the man on the left being the co-pilot presumably Lund.

Hal, I've messaged you with a picture of my uncle taken approximately 2 years before the Hanks crew photo.

Hal, after some research the James L. Liakos listed in the Hanks photo is also ID'd as part of the Mitchell crew on the 447th web site. A Lt. James L. Liakos is listed as buried in Riverside National Cemetery in California 1918-2005 age 86 AAF WWII. I don't believe it is the same person in both pictures.

    Geoff,
Can't really tell anything from the photo of the Mitchell crew on the web site.  Clipped this copy from the 447th Pictorial History but it is just as bad and is probably where they got the picture for the web site.  According to the caption Liakos would be the fourth from the left but you couldn't prove that by me.

Hi my brother John was the tail gunner for hanks yanks they misspelled his last name which should be Comeau, not Comeay. I remember a lot of stories he told of the time he spent in that plane with that crew.
