Dad: 385th BG, 549SQ Looking for information - 07/19/2007 10:18:25 AM
My dad, Sgt. Leonard A. Adams served in the 385th/549th at Great Ashfield, top turret gunner. His was the first plane to survive an oxygen-fed, turret-sparked fire, due to his foresight in installing a cut-off and then crimping his on O2 line when it caught fire at 39,000 ft., then extinguishing the fire. For that, he received a DFC and Col. Vandevanter recommended him for a Silver Star.

I'm looking for anything anyone might know about his squadron, plane, etc. I have a few pictures to share of the squadron, and some aircraft pictures. I'm particularly interested in anyone who might have a picture of Rose Olive, one of his planes. His crew consisted of men by the name of Kokel (?) Rhodes, Byers, ....blanking out on the Capt.'s name, even though I've been to his home...They were fortunate in that they never lost a member of their crew. I do have the names of all members of his crew at home, provided by one of the other guys a few years back.

Anyway, Thanks!

Jim McCabe
My father, Lt. Mike McCabe(deceased 4/26/05), 307th BG, 424th BS, was a Navigator based at Morotai. Mission dates ranged from 2/20/45-8/1/45.

Thank you for the interest! No, my father is not in that picture. I will have to scan and post the photos I have. And, while that group post you cited doesn't include my dad, it certainly gives me the number of that plane!

I finally recalled the name of the pilot of dad's crew...Lt. Laurence Volrath. He was from Baltimore.

I went back through some pictures last night and found a few that might be of some small interest. There's a nose art view of the Sky Chief, and Miss Bee (sp?) Haven. Also a small photo of the front of the 549th's Barracks row, with their insignia posted at the front. I'll try to get these scanned and entered.

I also have a large group photo of the 549th Squadron, if anyone thinks it's of interest I'll scan it in as well.

Hi Anna,
I would love to see the picture you have of the 385th BG, 549SQ.
My Dad was a member and I would love to find a photo of him and the men he served with.
Thanks,

Hi Anna,
My father also served in the 549th    SSgt. Francis Coughenour. He was a photographer. I have alot of his photos he took. I cant seem to find the plane he was assigned to or capt. name.
Would love to see any photos or info you have.
