Hello ,

On april 12th 1944 the crew of 2nd Lt Love Benjamin L
0-683558 from the -445BG-700BS flying # 42-100203 was lost over Belgium . Is there someone who can help me with a picture of the plane or its crew ?

Alain:

I do not have crew or aircraft photos for all of the 445th crews and planes - sorry.  I'll keep an eye out for any new photos that come in and will let you know.  Have you checked the Best B-24 Web site to see if they have a photo.  their URL is http://b24bw.proboards33.com/index.cgi.  They have over 6,000 aircraft pictures sorted by name.

I know the son of the co-pilot well.  Benjamine Love was killed during the mission when the flight deck was shot up by a German fighter making a head-on attack while on bomb run.  Love slumped over the flight controls and Robert Ripps (co-pilot) tried to get him off the control yoke as they were drifting out of formation.  Unfortunately, he did not succeed in time.  The plane (42-100203, no name) was hit by bombs dropped from the plane above.  Ripps was the only survivor and spent the next 6 months with the Dutch underground before finally being returned to Allied control in October, 1944.

Hello Mike,

Thanks for the information. The reason why i'm searching for a picture of this crews is to complete my research on the former allied cemetery where the crew was buried. They crashed at a place named Tohogne wich is situated in the southern part of Belgium. They were buried at the cemetery on the airfield of St-Trond ( Belgium ) at that time the homebase of the II./NJG 1. Any info on the crew etc would be very usefull.

Greetings
Alain

Hello Mike ,

It's me once again, do you have any info on Pfc Cotrell Glyn C  , the top turret gunner , who to my info was killed. There is no trace of him at the first burial site ?

Greetings

Alain

Alain:

Sorry - I have limited information on the crew members.  I do know that Sgt Glynn O. Cottrell, 36567820, was on his first mission with the 445th, flying as the tail turret gunner on Lt. Love's crew that day.  His rank and name spelling came from a copy of the original crew load list for the 700th Bomb Squadron for the 12 Apr 44 mission that I have.
