Correction,  this is the 759th Bomb Squadron.  AC is Serial # 42-52183 and this crew was one of the originals with Pilot Earle Lilley and Co-pilot Chester Williams.  A couple of these  guys may be members of the 459th BG Assoc and I'll get to you as soon as I verify it.

    Scott,
For what it is worth.  Scherbath's initials were J L.  He graduated from bombardier school at Big Springs, TX class 43-12.

My grandfather, who was in the 560th service squadron that worked on the planes at foggia italy during ww2 has plenty of pictures of this plane.  When I get a chance outside of work and busy schedule, I'll try to scan some of these pics., he actually has a ton of other pics of planes as well that him and his crew worked on at that airfield.  Mostly B-24s and a few p-47's.

According to his notes. (my pop passed away the beginning of this year.)  It says that this plane made 10 missions and crashed on the runway on the 11th.  I'm gonna take all his plane photos and get them copied this next friday if I can.  Some of the planes he has are Taking Off, hot Shotsie, Our Devotion, ragged but Right, our Baby, Sunny the Sailor, and alot more.

Great!!.   The group archives does not have photos of some of these.

459th had 2 aircraft with the name "Ten Hits and a Miss".  One flown by Henry Rutters and was ser #41-28677 in the 759th Bomb Sqnd was lost 3/3/44 .  The other was 42-52183 which crash landed 10/17/44.  Sqdn history suggests 183 was named after the loss of 677.  Both were original Aircraft in the 758th BS, 677 seems to have been transfeered or was flown by a 759th crew the day it was shot down.

I have another "Ten Hits and a Miss" crew. My father, Donald B Daniel is shown in a crew photo, taken on the right side of the aiaircraft, with the listed name showing on the fusalage. The crew are, listed in my mother's album without designation of their assignment,  Fischer,  Thacher, Armalion, Vogelfang, Hasimer, Gabs, Hewitt, Daniel, Kuhn, and DeSpain. The note under the photo says "455 Bomb Group. My father's discharge papers showh him to have served with the 758th H Bombardment Squadron. I hope to have my scanner up and working in the next couple of months, at s\which time I will be happy to share my pictures.

    Hi John,

Does your photo look like this one? (from B-24 Best Web):

    http://www.b24bestweb.com/tenhitsandamiss-v1.htm

The reason I ask is that the 455th BG, 741st BS also had an aircraft with the same name, and the group "Roll Call" shows a Donald B. Daniel with the 741st.  Just curious...

    Regards,

Yes! We have the same picture. I can add that Donald Daniel was the radio operator. That was his primary job. I will now also join the 455th forum. I really appreciate the information.

A name may not be unique.  Two 459th AC had this name that we know of and with the 451 and 455 there are 4 B-24s.  Eighth AF probably had a few as well.
